Once upon a time, there stood a beautiful inn at the foot of a mountain. The innkeeper was a greedy old woman {#blank#}1{#/blank#} was always thinking about money. One day, a rich man stopped at the inn. The innkeeper looked at the guest's fat money belt and thought, “Oh, if only all that money could be {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (me)!” 

    The rich man asked for the  {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(expensive) room at the inn and he went up to his room to dress for dinner. Now, all around the inn there grew beautiful Japanese ginger plants. Many people say that {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(eat) buds of ginger makes a person forgetful. This gave the innkeeper  {#blank#}5{#/blank#} idea. “This evening for dinner I will serve ginger buds!” she thought.

    “Then, when the rich man {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(leave) tomorrow morning, he'll be forgetful and leave his money belt behind!” She ran into the kitchen and started cooking up the most delicious ginger buds she had ever made. Soon, the rich man came down the stairs and requested dinner. The innkeeper could hardly control her {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(joyful) as she served him dish after dish of ginger buds.

    “Delicious!” said the rich man. When dinner was finished, he went to bed {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(happy). In the morning, the innkeeper saw the rich man off at the front door. As soon as he was out of sight, she ran up to his room. She couldn't find the money belt {#blank#}9{#/blank#} she looked all over the room for it. Suddenly, she noticed a piece of paper on the floor. It was the rich man's bill. He had forgotten {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(pay) for it!

    She ran down the stairs, out the front door, and up the road until she was out of breath, but the rich man was already far, far away.

    More than 95 percent of people in the world have phones today, according to the United Nations. People use phones to make phone calls and send {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (信息)to communicate with others. Now we hardly write letters. But a TV show, Letters Alive, is bringing back this old {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(习惯).

    Letters Alive gets its idea from a UK program with a {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (相似的) name. They have something in common. The shows both {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (邀请) famous actors and actresses, but there are no funny jokes or different competitions.{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (代替), it is just one person reading a letter. Since it has been on in{#blank#}6{#/blank#} (十二月) , Letters Alive has been widely praised.

    The letters were written by people from different times in history. For example, once they read a letter written by famous writer Xiao Hong to her brother who is {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (年轻的) than her in 1941. The letter shows that Xiao Hong{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (想念) her brother so much and had great hopes for his future.

    “Every letter opens another world for us,” said Guan Zhengwen, the {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (导演) of the TV show. “It seems that we can experience the real lives and feelings of the writers.”

    Two years later, Mrs. Baker's father died. they got into trouble(麻烦)at once. But Mrs. baker wasn't good at{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(do)anything, so Mr. baker had to find another job to make more money.

    One evening he went home happily and said, "My friends help me {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(find) a job in another office. I{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (go) to work tomorrow. My shirt is worn out(破了)，dear. Will you please make a new one for me?"

    "I'm sorry I {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(not do) it," said the woman," I have never made any shirts before, you know."

    "{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(try) your best, dear." said Mr. Baker, "I{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(like) my old shirt, please make a new one like it"

    "Well, let me try.

    The next morning , as soon as Mr. Baker{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (get) up, his wife showed her husband the new shirt and said," Try it on ,dear!"

    Mr. Baker had a look at the shirt and asked in surprise(惊奇地), "Why{#blank#}10{#/blank#} the new shirt {#blank#}11{#/blank#}(have) several holes in it?"

    Pointing to(指着) the old shirt, she said," Look! There're some holes in your old shirt, too."
