Scientists were studying sea turtles (龟) in Costa Rica. That is in Central America. One turtle had something sticking out of its nose. The turtle could not breathe. At first, the scientists thought it was a worm (虫). They pulled it out. It was a plastic straw ( 吸管). The scientists made sure the turtle was healthy. It came back into the water. The scientists posted a video of helping the turtle on the Internet. When people saw it, they were shocked. The video made Diana Lofflin start StrawFree.org. The group is in California. Its goal is to make people know the harm plastic straws take to the environment. Lofflin hopes people will find some things instead of plastic straws. "Straws are not necessary for enjoying a drink," she says. "Saying no to a plastic straw is a way to make a difference in the world."

Plastic rubbish washes into rivers and oceans when it rains. Fish and other animals eat the plastic. It can kill them. An activity to ban plastic straws is growing. In California, it isn't allowed for food servers to give straws to customers who don't ask for them. Nancy Wallace works for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in Washington, D.C. She says schools should refuse to use plastic. Kids must do their part, too.

Have you ever considered starting a fitness program? Since exercise can reduce the risk of diseases, improve balance, help lose weight, better sleep habits and even make you confident, you should start a fitness program in the following steps.

    Test your fitness level

How many meters can you walk or run in one minute? How much time does it take you to swim 50 meters? What is your heart rate (心率)? The data (数据) of your fitness level can help you know what activities you need.

    Design your fitness program

You may have begun your daily exercise. But a personal plan helps more. First, you should have your fitness goals (目标). For example, what do you want to look like, to be slimmer or quicker? A balanced plan will help you start low, progress slowly, do right activities and even allow you to recover (康复) if you get hurt.

    Prepare things needed for sports

You need something practical, enjoyable and easy to use. It could be a pair of trainers, a volleyball or a bicycle. You can also download fitness apps (应用程序) on your mobile phone to measure distances, calories burned or your heart rate.

    Take action

Now you're ready for action. When you begin, don't always try tough tasks. Listen to your body and reduce exercise time if necessary.

    Monitor your progress

Test your fitness level again six weeks later. If you have achieved your goals, increase exercise time to continue improving.

Starting an exercise program is an important decision. By planning carefully and acting step by step, you can have good health.

A study conducted by the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom suggest that watching cute animals may lead to a reduction in stress and anxiety.

The study examined how watching images and videos of cute animals for 30 minutes affects blood pressure, heart rate(心率) and anxiety. In December 2019, 19 people, including 15 students, joined in the study.

"There were some kittens, there was puppies, there were baby gorillas, there were quokkas —cute creatures found in Western Australia, are often referred to as 'the world's most cheerful animals'." Dr. Andrea Utley, a professor at the University of Leeds told CNN. The study was timed during winter exams, a time when stress is at an especially high level for students, according to Utley.

The study recorded that the average blood pressure dropped from 136/88 to 115/71, which the study pointed out is "within ideal blood pressure range." Average(平均的) heart rates were lowered to 67.4 bpm, a reduction of 6.5%. Anxiety rates also went down by 35%.

"I was quite pleasantly surprised that during the session, every single measure for every single participant dropped some — heart rate reduced, blood pressure reduced," Utley said. "When they left, they filled the questionnaire(调查问卷) in again and showed that they were feeling less worried."

When questioning the participants, the study found that most preferred video clips over still images, particularly of animals interacting with humans.

Joel Sartore is a writer, teacher, and photographer. His words and beautiful images show his love of photography and of the natural world.

Question 1: How did you become a National Geographic photographer?

My first job was for a newspaper. After a few years there, I met a National Geographic photographer. He liked my photos and said I should send some to the magazine. So I did. That led to a one—day job. And that led to a nine—day job, and so on.

Question 2:     ▲

To get into National Geographic, you have to give them something they don't have. It's not enough just to be a great photographer. You also have to be a scientist, for example, or be able to dive under sea ice, or spend maybe several days in a tree.

Question 3: Is it hard to get a job as a photographer today?

It's now harder to work for magazines. Technology makes it easy to take good pictures, which means there are more photos and photographers. Also, the Web is filled with photos from all around the world that are free, or cost very little. These photos are often good enough to be put in books and magazines. What the magazines need to do these days is to pay for these photos.

Question 4: I want to be a photographer. Do you have any advice for me?

Advice? Well, work hard. Be passionate (热情的)about every project you work on. Take lots of pictures in different situations. Look at others' photos thoughtfully and learn from them. And be curious about everything. There's something to photograph everywhere.
