While my father was an officer of the British army in South Africa, we lived in a two-storeyed house. One evening my father and sister and I were sitting together. He was 1 the window. I suddenly 2 that he was turning very pale. I sat 3 for I didn't want to 4 my sick sister. Soon father said in a 5voice, “Kate and Joan, a friend of mine 6 here to see me this evening, and I wish to be 7 him. Will you go up to your own room?” We obeyed, went to our room and closed the door.

    Soon I heard a8 like that of a door burst in, and then a climb of feet. They were hurrying 9 the narrow stairs. Fearing that there was10 near, I seized the pistol (手枪) on the table. Then I heard my father cry out, “For God's sake, child,11 the door.” I did so. To my scare, I saw,12 my father's shoulder; a gorilla (大猩猩), the worst enemy of the soldier in Europe, he was 13 my father. I raised the pistol and fired. The animal fell backwards with an/a 14 loud cry. Father took the still 15 pistol from my hand, and fired another shot, which killed the gorilla.

    It happened when father 16 us upstairs because he thought he would be able to 17the door-which was twenty feet away 18 the animal reached it. However, the gorilla was too 19and this was the cause of the 20 flight (escape) up the stairs.

    It was a cold winter's afternoon, Robert stopped for a moment as he crossed the bridge and looked down at the river below. There were hardly any 1 on the river. Near the bridge, however, almost  2  below, there was a small canoe（独木舟）, with a boy in it. He was not wearing many clothes, Robert 3 . He shivered（打了个寒颤）and walked on.

     4  he heard a cry. “Help! Help!” The cry came from the river. Robert looked down. The boy was  5   the water and his canoe was floating away, “Help! Help!” he called again.

    Robert was a good  6 . Taking off his clothes, he dived into the river. The 7  water made him tremble all over,  8 in a few seconds he reached the9. “Don't be afraid,” he said and started to swim towards the river bank,10 the boy with him. But at that 11 he noticed a large motor boat under the bridge. There were several people on the boat, all 12   in his direction. Robert 13 to swim towards the boat.

    “Give me a hand,” he shouted 14he got near the boat. He15  into a row of faces. “It's funny,” he thought. “They look so 16 .” Silently they helped the boy into the boat and 17  him in a blanket. But they did not move to 18  Robert.

    “Aren't you going to pull me 19  too?” Robert asked.

    “You!” said one of the men. Robert noticed that he was standing next to a large 20 . “You! Why, we were making a film and you spoiled a whole afternoon's work! You can stay in the water.”

    My mother seemed to be able to make dolls (洋娃娃) out of anything. She made some dolls for me and my two elder sisters. I 1 playing with them, but still, secretly, I hoped for a store-bought 2like the one our rich cousin had. Her doll 3 open and close its blue glass eyes and even say "Mamma". I 4 stopped admiring it and hoping to have one.

    However, my dream 5came true when I was six. One day my father came back from his business trip with three 6 dolls! They were much smaller than our cousin's doll and their eyes were just painted ones, but I did not 7 such differences. They were 8 "store-bought" dolls. We each chose one and I named 9 Misako.

    Soon my sisters and I became devoted 10. Our "children" kept us 11 all day. We gave them a bath, 12 them, brushed their hair, took them out for a walk and put them to bed. Several months later, they got more like real children — their 13 and bodies became dirtier; their dresses got stained; their hair less smooth.

    But, by then, 14 interests seemed to have moved into 15 toys. Their dolls were abandoned (被抛弃) and in bad condition. One had 16 one of her arms, and 17 was one-legged. "You can 18 them if you want," my sisters said to me. Thus, I had 19 dolls. They were more or less handicapped (残疾) and they often looked at me as if they needed me to 20 them. I enjoyed this feeling of being needed — being the only one in the world who could protect them with a lot of love. Indeed, they made the rest of my childhood days very happy.

    It's a family tradition to go to dinner at my grandmother's house for all major holidays. After the meal, the youngest children go to the basement to play games, 1 the remainder of my family withdraw to the living room. For several years, I'd remain at the 2 dinner table, reading whatever book had caught my interest. I'll never forget the day when this all 3. My aunt came into the dinning room and said, “4 that book and talk to me before I hit you with this fork!”

    I'd been content to remain the attentive listener, 5 nothing, but hearing everything. Then came the 6 that I was antisocial, to which I 7 with a silent smile. There was a time when I foolishly believed my family would accept my preference；8, they seem to believe that they should encourage me to 9. In my opinion,  I'm the only one that has adapted well to the familial（熟悉的）talkativeness. What would be the 10 of all these voices if there weren't someone to shut up and 11?

    My 12 isn't the only thing my family finds puzzling. I would scream “No!” at 2 a. m. 13 a character was horrifically killed. I become active at night in summer so I can listen to music, read, and write without the 14 of my brothers and sisters, who seem to think if I want to  be 15 they should come near me and make as much 16 as possible.

    My family doesn't completely 17 all of my actions. They're well aware of what makes me 18 is reading while sitting in one of the black comfortable chairs. I've 19 that reading a book of any great length would make it extremely 20 for my parents to get me from the chair. Fortunately they have learned to accept my actions.

    At two, most children are happy to play with stuffed toys. 1, for Freddie Bawden, life on the farm is not child's play but a labour of 2.

    Feddie likes nothing more than 3 his working suit to join his father James and mother Kayleigh as they 4 their animals. He helps feed the pigs, sheep and other animals. 5 his young age, Freddie takes his duties very 6. He also helps make up their feed and gives the animals water before sweeping up and laying down 7 hay.

    Freddie even has two battery-powered 8 of his own for carrying hay. Mr Bawden said, "He's really 9 actually. It's good for him to 10 up around animals. It gets him outside a lot and he absolutely loves it really."

    Like most children, of course Freddie goes to 11 one-and-a-half days a week, but he spends the rest of his time helping his parents, who also 12 a dog training centre on the farm. The youngster helps to 13 the dogs, as well as feed them and sweep the kennels (狗舍). He also likes to join in the special training sessions, 14 toys for the dogs to 15 after. Mr Bawden said some even 16 better to Freddie than they did to their adult owners who may "overthink" things.

    Mr Bawden 17 most two-year-old are more likely to be found watching TV or playing with 18. But he said, "If he wants to come with me, he can. If he doesn't, he doesn't have to. He's really healthy, fit and strong. He eats well and 19 well because he's doing so much. He loves 20 off, and he loves showing other people his pigs and sheep."

    When most of us get a text message on our cell phone from an unknown person, we usually say "sorry, 1 number!" and move on. But when Dennis Williams 2 a text that clearly wasn't intended for him, he did something 3.

    On March 19, Dennis got a group text 4 him that a couple he didn't know were at the hospital, waiting for the 5 of a baby.

    "Congratulations! But I think someone was mistaken," Dennis 6. The baby was born and update texts were 7 quickly from the overjoyed grandmother, Teresa. In her 8, she didn't seem to realize that she was 9 the baby's photos with a complete stranger. "Well, I don't 10 you all but I will get there to take pictures with the baby," replied Dennis before asking which room the new 11 were in.

    Much to the family's surprise, Dennis stuck to his 12! He turned up at the hospital 13 gifts for the new mother Lindsey and her baby boy. Lindsey's husband was totally 14 by the unexpected visit. "I don't think we would have randomly invited him over but we 15 it and the gifts."

    Teresa 16 a photo of the chance meeting on a social networking website 17 by the touching words: "What a 18 this young man was to our family! He was so 19 and kind to do this." The post has since gained the 20 of social media users all over the world, receiving more than 184, 000 shares and 61, 500 likes in just three days.
