Once a man's wife adopted a dog. The woman loved the dog so much that she spent plenty of time playing {#blank#}1{#/blank#}  him. It was obvious to the man {#blank#}2{#/blank#}his wife preferred the dog. With time going by, the man disliked the dog more and more.

    Finally, the man made a  {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(decide) to abandon the dog. So one day he drove the dog {#blank#}4{#/blank#}  (mile) away from his home. He threw the dog in the woods and then returned to his car.  {#blank#}5{#/blank#}  soon after the car was started, it broke down. Feeling cold in the car, the man became  {#blank#}6{#/blank#}  (worry). He  needed some help, but{#blank#}7{#/blank#}cars appeared and he could see no one nearby. Then he saw the dog {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (walk) towards him. The dog stopped by the car and barked. The man opened the car and let him in. The dog sat beside {#blank#}9{#/blank#} and kept the man warm. At last, a car came and the man {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (save). He went back home, with the dog, of course.

    What is standard English? Is it spoken in Britain, the US, Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand? Believe it or not, there is no such thing as standard English. Many people believe the English spoken on TV {#blank#}1{#/blank#} the radio is standard English. This is because in the early days of radio, those who {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(report) the news were expected to speak excellent English. However, on TV and the radio you will hear differences in the way people speak.

    When people use words and {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(expression) different from the "standard language", it is {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(call) a dialect. American English{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(have) many dialects, especially the Midwestern, southern, African American and Spanish dialects. Even in some parts{#blank#}6{#/blank#} the USA, two people from neighboring towns speak a little {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(different). American English has so many dialects because people have come from all over the world. Geography also plays a part in {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (make) dialects. Some people {#blank#}9{#/blank#}live in the mountains of the eastern USA speak with an older kind of English dialect. When Americans moved from one place to another, they took their dialects with {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(they).

    Thousands of people got{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(stick) in lifts. Martin Saltzman spent three hours between the 21st and 22nd floors of {#blank#}2{#/blank#}Empire State Building. Rise After Falling

    A father was worried about his son, {#blank#}1{#/blank#}was sixteen years old but had no courage at all. So the father decided to call on a Buddhist monk(僧侣){#blank#}2{#/blank#} (train) his boy.

    The Buddhist monk said to the boy's father, "I insist that your son should be left alone here. I'll make him into a real man within three months. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}, you can't come to see him during this period."

    Three months later, the boy's father {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (return). The Buddhist monk arranged a boxing match between the boy and an {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(experience) boxer. Each time the fighter struck the boy , he {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (fall) down, but at once the boy stood up; and each time a heavy blow knocked him down, the boy stood up again. Several times later, the Buddhist monk asked, "{#blank#}7{#/blank#}do you think of your child?"

    "What a shame!" the boy's father said, "I never thought he would be so {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (easy) knocked down. I needn't have him stay here any {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (long)!

"I'm sorry that that's all you see. Don't you see that each time he falls down, he stands up again instead of {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (cry)? That's the kind of courage you wanted him to have.

    When you {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(hurt) deeply by someone, you may feel it very difficult {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(remove)your anger. But forgiving is possible and it can be {#blank#}3{#/blank#}great benefit to your health. Up to now, a research {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (show) that people who forgive have more energy, better appetite and better sleep. "People who forgive show {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (little) anger and more hopefulness," says Dr. Frederic Luskin, {#blank#}6{#/blank#} wrote the book Forgive for Good. "So it can help reduce the tiredness and allow people to feel more {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (energy)."

    So when someone hurts you, cool down first. Take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure. Don't wait for an apology. "Many times the person who hurt you may escape {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (apologize)," says Dr. Luskin. "They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don't see things in same way."

    Next keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean accepting {#blank#}9{#/blank#} the person has done to you. Finally, try to see things from that person's opinions. To achieve it, just put {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (you) in that person's place.

    I can still remember the day we brought her home from the animal shelter (收容所). Lexie moved in my arms when I held her, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} the second I handed this lovely dog to my daughter, she settled down. When it was time {#blank#}7{#/blank#} Lexie to go home, I could see Lexie's {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(excite) as I leashed (用皮带牵) her up. I opened the back door and let her out. She was running as fast as she could. I called her name, but {#blank#}9{#/blank#} was no use. She had found my daughter on the road. My daughter bent down to pick her up. Lexie jumped into her arms and happily licked her face.

    I smiled, seeing she was back {#blank#}10{#/blank#} she belonged.
