House fires cause many deaths each year and a large number of these fires are unluckily set by children. So, it's important to teach them that fire is a tool, not a toy. Kids must understand they'd better not play with fire. (A) You should keep matches out of their reach.

A smoke alarm greatly (B) reduces your chances of being hurt in a fire. The main job of such an alarm is to protect you while you're asleep. You ought to have two plans for getting out of your house if there is a fire and practise these plans in the dark with your family.

If it feels hot, there may be smoke or (D)          behind the door, so take care. Once you are out of your house, call the fire department from a neighbor's house. If a family member or a pet is caught inside, you shouldn't go back in. Firemen know how to do the rescue work safely.

A smoke alarm is only good if it's working properly. Change the batteries at least once a year. You should use the test button each month to see (E)          the alarm and batteries are still working. A smoke alarm lasts ten years. You ought to change it even if it seems to be working.

Answer the questions.(根据短文内容回答下列问题) :

When Jan and Brian Dutcher moved to San Diego for Brian's new job at San Diego State University, the neighbors smiled and introduced themselves. But there were no “ bring a plate” invitations, no car pooling for her daughters Liza, 12 and Erin, 15.

“The family really didn't know each other, and we missed that,” says Jan.“We are far from relatives. Neighbors are our family.”

So Jan, an artist, decided to repeat a project she had done for Liza's fifth-grade class: ask each person to paint his or her face on a big canvas(帆布).The finished piece would become the new family photo.

First , Jan painted a grid(网格) on the canvas and put it up in the garage with a table of paints nearby. Then whenever she was home, the “art room” door was up , with an open invitation for neighbors to paint. The first to stop in were kids riding by. “They thought it was cool,” says Jan, but the adults weren't so keen. “ Most said they hadn't picked up a paint brush since kindergarten,” she says. “They were afraid they'd mess it up.” But as word slowly spread, they came, some using their driver's license photos as models.

Then something started to happen. They returned —to see who had painted, or if they could recognize who was who. In Jan's garage, they began to chat about schools, jobs, and families. Almost daily. Wendy, who lived across the street and was seriously ill, came in her wheelchair to watch the fun. Neighbors began to offer their support.

When the worst things happened and Wendy died, they stood by her husband, Bill and invited him over for dinners.

This year has been different in the neighborhood. Families take turns hosting happy hours. “We're watching over each other now just like in the painting.” says Jan.

根据短文内容,回答下列问题。

Four good friends Mouse, Crow, Turtle and Deer lived in the forest. Every day they met at the lake and told each other interesting stories.

One day Deer did not come to the lake to drink water.

    The other three were worried.

"I saw a hunter (猎人) in the forest this morning," said Crow. "I'm afraid Deer might be hurt."

"Fly over the forest, Crow," said Mouse. "Please see if you can find our friend Deer."

It took him a few minutes before Crow saw Deer caught in a trap (陷阱) made of ropes. He flew back right away to ask the other two for help. When they arrived, Mouse and Crow began to break the ropes. Turtle kept talking to Deer to help her feel better.

Just then, the hunter came to check his trap. "Everyone, leave now," said Turtle.

Deer at once ran away with Mouse. Turtle just lifted a foot up when the hunter got close.

"My trap is empty," said the hunter. "But, a turtle is better than nothing. I will eat turtle soup tonight." The hunter picked Turtle up and started for home.

"Now we all must help our friend Turtle," said Deer.

Deer lay down on the way. She seemed dead. Crow flew and landed on Deer's head. The hunter saw Deer so he put Turtle down to get Deer. As soon as the hunter left Turtle, Mouse ran up and helped Turtle hide in the forest. Deer jumped up and ran off .The hunter went back to get Turtle, but he found him gone. "How scary! There is magic here," he said to himself in great fear. Then he rushed out of the forest and never came back again.

There was magic in the forest that day. That magic was called friendship.

We did a survey (调查) about students' free time activities yesterday. One of our questions was about exercise and of course, it is the most important one. From the survey, we knew only 25% of the girls often have activities outside. Many girls do little exercise. They don't like P.E. classes and even don't play sports. These girls may face a lot of problems. They may get fatter and weaker, And they may get some kinds of illnesses(疾病) easily. Wang Jing, a 16-year-old girl, said, "I don't like doing exercise. I like watching TV on the sofa. I spend at least three hours watching TV a day. My sleeping time is no more than seven hours a day. I often feel tired

Some girls said, "We don't have enough time to do exercise. We must help our parents with housework because they are very tired after a day's work. We do some washing, clean the house and finish the homework. We don't have time for doing anything else."

Everyone may have these excuses(借口) for not doing exercise. However, we must know that if we don't do exercise, we will get sick easily. As students, we'd better exercise every day. That makes us live a healthy life.
