Teenager Jake Deham was skiing with his family in the USA when he fell over and lost one of his skis. His family didn't know that he had a problem. They kept on skiing. When they got to the foot of the mountain, there was no sign of Jake.

    Jake couldn't find his ski anywhere. In the end, he decided to take off his other ski and walk down the mountain. But he couldn't work out the right way to go.

    It was now getting dark and he was a long way from any place of safety. He knew that he might die that night in the cold temperatures. But Jake kept calm. At home, Jake watched a lot of programs about living in difficult situations. He remembered the advice from these programs and knew that he should build a hole in the snow. He made a hole and pointed it up the hill so the wind couldn't blow into it. Outside his hole, the temperature fell to a dangerous-15℃ that night, but inside it Jake was safe from the cold.

    But he had to get down the mountain. The TV programs always said," If you are lost, you should find someone else's tracks(足迹) through the snow and follow them." "I wanted to live my life." remembers Jake." So I got up and I found some ski tracks and I followed those." He walked and walked and finally he saw lights. Nine hours after he lost his ski, he found a team of worker who came to save him. He was safe!

    His mum was very happy when she heard the news. Amazingly, Jake didn't even have to go to hospital. He got through the terrible experience without any injuries.

    So, the next time someone says that watching TV is a waste of time, think of Jake. Sometimes TV can save your life!

    Jack is my best friend. He is in a new school. He likes it very much. It's not far from his home. And it usually takes him 10 minutes to get to school by bike. School begins at 8: 00 every morning. But these days Jack is often late for school. This morning, he is late again. The teacher is very angry.

    "How do you usually come to school?" asks the teacher. "By bike." Jack answers. "What time do you usually get up?" "At 6: 30." "Well, it's not late. What time do you usually leave home?" "I leave home at 7: 55." "Why not leave home earlier?" "My mother is ill (生病的). She stays in bed all day. I must look after her and give her medicine at the right time， so I'm often late for school," says Jack with tears (泪水) in his eyes. "I see, Jack, you are a good boy!" says the teacher.

Archimedes and the golden crown

One day in ancient Greece, King Hiero asked a crown maker to make him a golden crown. At first, he was very 1 with it.

"It's a nice crown, isn't it?" he asked his men. Later, however, he began to doubt 2it was a real golden crown. "Is it made completely of gold?" he wondered. He sent it to Archimedes and asked him to find out the truth.

"This problem seems difficult to solve. What should I do?" thought Archimedes.

Archimedes was still thinking about this problem 3he filled his bath with water. When he got into the bath, some water ran over.  

"That's it!" shouted Archimedes. "I know 4 to solve the king's problem!"

Archimedes went straight to the palace to see the king. First, he 5the crown and asked the king for some gold of the same weight.

Next, he put two pots into two big bowls and filled 6pots with water. He put the gold into one pot, and some water ran into the bowl. Then he put the crown into 7pot. This time, even more water ran into the bowl.

"Look at this," said Archimedes to King Hiero. "A crown 8completely of gold displaces 9water than a crown made of gold and another metal. This crown displaced more water than gold of the same weight, so I'm certain that it is not 10made of gold. "

"The crown maker tricked me, didn't he? What a bad man he is!" shouted King Hiero. He then sent the crown maker to prison.

It was raining heavily as I was walking up the hill towards the station at six o'clock on a Saturday morning. At this early hour there wasn't much traffic and there weren't many people. Just as I was crossing the road near the top of the hill, a car came around the corner. It was traveling very fast. Suddenly it hit a lamp post and turned over.

    I ran to the car to help the driver at once. He was badly hurt and there was a lot of blood on his face. A young woman hurried into the station and phoned for an ambulance, while I took care of the driver. Many people came to see what happened. A policeman arrived a few minutes later and asked me a lot of questions about the accident. After a while the ambulance arrived and the driver was sent to the hospital.

    On Monday morning I went to the hospital to see the man. The doctor told me that he was much better, and he would leave the hospital after a few day's rest.

    Mr. Smith is from 1 , but he lived in London for ten years. So he can speak German and English. He also likes seeing the world. So far he has 2 to many big cities in the world, such as New York, Rome, Paris and so on.

    A few years ago, he came to China 3 the Great Wall. After that he fell in love with China and 4 to stay there.
