One of my best friends went abroad to enjoy her holidays, so the job of looking after her dog Missy has been given to me. A few months ago, Missy came to my friend's house. She looked terrible. She has been abused for a long time.

When we first visited my friend and Missy, my friend had to gently pull her over on a lead (牵绳) to get her to come to us. She wanted to come but afraid to do so—the poor, beautiful thing. Clearly Missy came to the right home. My friend has given birth to a baby of his own and shows the love of a mother. This is just what Missy needs. Thanks to the love of my friend, she has changed into a new dog step by step. Sadly, she is still afraid of strange humans. I hate to imagine what the dog must have gone through.

Now, Missy trusts me completely, so I can touch her berry(肚皮).While standing, she will jump up so gently to be closer to me, putting her paws(爪子)on my legs as she looks at me with those beautiful eyes.

Missy is really brave. She has the courage to try again, to open her hearts, and to know that not everyone is the same kind of people as before. Keep it in mind that tomorrow is another day.

举一反三
I'm lying on my back in my grandfather's orchard (果园), looking up at the branches above me. It is one of the last days of summer. Already the days are shorter and the nights are cooler. Some kinds of apples are already ripe(成熟的). Others will be ready to pick soon. I think of my grandmother's apple pie, and how I used to make it with her. She died last year, before the apple harvest, and I have not had her pie since then. I really miss her. I hear bees busily humming about, visiting the late summer flowers. The gentle hum of their wings nearly sends me to sleep.
The sky is as blue as my grandfather's eyes. Above me, big white clouds ran across the sky like pieces of cotton blowing in the wind. School starts in another week, and time seems to have slowed down.
"Sophie!" calls my grandfather. "Is that you?" I stand up, take his hand, and tell him all about my day as we walk through the orchard. We talk about apples, and bees and Grandma. He tells me that he misses her too.
He hputs his rough, brown farmer's hand around my shoulder and pulls me close. " You know, Sophie," he says, " I spent the morning in the attic (阁楼), and you'll never guess what I found. It's the recipe(烹饪法) for Grandma's apple pie. I used to help her make it sometimes. I can't do it all alone, but you used to help her too. Maybe between the two of us, we can work it out. Want to try?"
" But it won't be the same without Grandma," I tell him.
" That's true," he says, "but nothing is the same without Grandma. Still, I don't think that she would want us never to have another apple pie. What do you say?" I nod yes, and we walk towards home…toward an afternoon in the farmhouse kitchen, making Grandma's famous apple pie.

"Excuse me," said a young man, standing shyly at the open church door. "I'm here to pick up an Easter basket for my daughter. Am I in the right place?" Well, we have baskets, but they're not Easter baskets for kids they're food baskets,” I explained.
That morning I arrived at St. Micheal's Church in Carmichael, California, to help give out the baskets to needy families for Easter. To make sure every family would receive one, we had handed out numbers to them that matched the basket they were supposed to receive. Each one contained a whole ham, potatoes, bread, vegetables, and a pie — enough food to help feed a family for a week.
"Why don't you come in?" I said to the man. He looked disappointed. He shook his head and said, "I can't... My daughter is waiting for me over there. I'm grateful for the food, but when I heard you were giving away baskets for Easter ... well, I thought they would be Easter baskets for children."He continued, "I promised my daughter one, and I wanted to surprise her."
I felt bad, but there was nothing I could do. The man handed me his number, and I walked over to the baskets. A bulge(凸起) in one of the baskets caught my eye. "What is that?" I wondered. Leaning over and looking more closely, I could see, unmistakably, an Easter basket — filled with candy, chocolate, and Easter eggs. One of the volunteers must have added it by mistake! I thought. Then I looked at the man's number in my hand. Well, he'll be....
"Happy Easter," I said to the man, handing him the only food basket with an Easter basket inside — the very same basket with his number on it. "Someone knew just what you needed."

Qian Xuesen was born in Shanghai on December 11th, 1911. He is known as "the father of China's space program" and "The king of the rocket".

When he was 24 years old, Qian went to America for further study. After graduation, he worked in America for a few years, where his working conditions were better. In the early 1950s, he heard New China had been founded(成立) and decided not to stay in America any longer. He succeeded in coming back to his motherland in 1955 though the American government tried to stop him.

In 1956, Qian Xuesen suggested setting up a special organization, which later became the leading organization for China's rocket and air travel program. In June 1964, China successfully created its first medium rocket. Qian also played an important role in developing China's first man-made satellite(卫星). On April 24, 1970, "Dongfanghong-I was successfully sent into the air."

In 1964, a young man wrote Qian Xuesen a letter and pointed out a mistake in his published article. Qian immediately answered the letter and encouraged the young man to write an article out the mistake.

Zhu Yilin, who was said to be the last student of Qian Xuesen, once said, "I learned a lot of professional knowledge as well as the spirit and attitude that a scientist should have from Mr. Qian, especially his deep love for the motherland. Without that, they couldn't have helped to develop science and technology when New China was badly development. Without that, he would not have made the great contribution(贡献)to industry in the late 1950s and early 1960s when conditions in China were too hard

Mr. Qian has been dead for ten years, but he will live in the memory of Chinese people forever.
