He was so hungry {#blank#}2{#/blank#} he decided to beg for a meal at the next house. A lovely young woman opened the door.     Years later, the young woman became seriously ill and {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (send) to a big hospital. Dr. William Smith, now famous, was called in for the consultation (咨询). He recognized her at once and was determined to try his best {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (save) her life.

    After a long struggle, the battle was won. But the woman had to pay a lot of money {#blank#}9{#/blank#} the treatment. Dr. Smith, then requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it and then wrote something on it. The bill was sent to her room. She opened it, and found a note on the side of {#blank#}10{#/blank#} bill in surprise, which read: "Paid in full with a glass of milk, (signed) Dr. William Smith."

    Agricultural experts say crop diversity is important to feed the{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(increase) population of our planet. They say having a large variety of plants also{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(help) to protect against possible crop diseases and future crises. But many experts say the number has decreased sharply during the past century.

The Millennium Seed Bank Partnership is warning that up to one hundred thousand plant species could {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (permanent) disappear. The rich collection of genes{#blank#}5{#/blank#} decide their qualities would disappear with them.

    Many experts blame climate change and loss of habitat, normal growth area, for damaging plant life. They say human{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(activity) and poorly planned, overly heavy use of land also are responsible. Modern business farming is responsible{#blank#}7{#/blank#}loss of farmers' traditional crop varieties. The "Green Revolution" of the twentieth century changed agriculture. Some experts say the use of modern commercial farming methods saved millions of people from{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(starve). Farmers planted, watered, and fertilized their crops with the help of machines. They treated their fields with chemicals{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(control) diseases and insects. Harvests grew larger and higher quality,{#blank#}10{#/blank#} another result was that some traditional crops were lost. Damage to the environment over the past century makes people believe that crop diversity also suffered.

    Now, I'd like to tell you about the development of computers. Computers began {#blank#}1{#/blank#} a calculating machine in France in 1642, it could {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (simple) difficult sums. In 1936, Alan Turing wrote a book about how a computer could be made to work as a "universal Machine" {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (solve) any difficult mathematical problem. Over time computer's memory {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (develop) so much that computers remember everything they have been told. In the early 1960s computers could be connected to each other by the network {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (call) the World Wide Web.

    Many new {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (apply) have been found for computers since the1970s. They have been used in communication, finance, trade, robots, mobile phones, space rockets and so the goal of computers is to provide humans {#blank#}10{#/blank#} a life of high quality.

    Discovering yourself plays {#blank#}1{#/blank#} important role in inspiring your confidence. By doing so, you could know {#blank#}2{#/blank#} you are weak in. And you may also realize you're quite a great person with great strengths. So when you're in a hard situation, you will believe in {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (you) and spend the most difficult time with confidence. Otherwise you may give up and then lose everything. Therefore, the ability {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (trust) yourself will decide your future a lot.

    When I was in the seventh grade, I had{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(difficult) behaving. My heart was in the right place, but I couldn't always follow the rules. I played many tricks{#blank#}2{#/blank#}my schoolmates. Once, I even pulled a girl's hair on the school bus to get her attention. As{#blank#}3{#/blank#}result, I was repeatedly sent to the office of the headmaster. Although I hated going there, I did not hate the headmaster, Mr. Smith.

    When he punished me for {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(put) some ants into a classmate's pencil box, it didn't hurt at all, but it did hurt my feelings. I thought so much of him and moments like that seemed{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(prove) I was hopelessly bad.

    Mr. Smith was really kind. He made me realize that I was just a kid{#blank#}9{#/blank#}had problems with{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(behave). Mr. Smith gave me some hope by giving me some love. I will just remember him forever.
