选择最恰当的词组或单词,完成短文

The other day, I happened to meet someone I hadn't seen for many years. I couldn't believe the change in him. In fact, he didn't even seem like the same person.

When I first knew Bill, back in 1 he was one of the most carefree people I had ever met. He was always ready to have a party. He thought nothing of (把…当作平常事) going out for beer at three o'clock in the morning or driving 50 miles to see an old movie he really liked. Bill and I were in the same class in college, and 2 was never dull when he was around. With him there was one wild adventure after another. Sometimes I wondered how we 3 to study for our exams.

Last week I was in Houston on business and I ran into Bill in the bar at the hotel. 4, I wasn't even sure it was him.Was this short-haired businessman really the same person? I wasn't really sure until I came near him but it indeed was Bill. Now be works for a bank. He talked most of the evening about his job, his new car and his house. How he had changed! Back when we were in college, the last thing Bill cared about was possessions (财富). Now they seemed to be his main 5. Although I have changed quite a bit myself, somehow, I never imagined Bill changing so much. My image of him remained the one I had formed at the time when we were college students together.

I suppose it's foolish to expect people to remain the same, especially when I have changed so much myself. But I must say that I enjoyed the old Bill much more than the new Bill. Maybe he felt the same way about me.

"Spell ‘champion,'" Scott told his elder sister.

"C-h-a-m-p-i-o-n."

Unsure about it, Scott still cheered, "You'll win the spelling bee (拼写大赛)!"

Lucy thanked, happy but worried, wondering if her dog Senator would be looked after well when she was away for a week.

"Dad and I will keep him perfectly!" said Scott, dreaming of getting his own pet if he could prove himself.

It was time to leave. Dad wished Lucy good luck.

"See you in a w-e-a-k," Scott said.

"W-e-e-k," Lucy corrected him and said, "Bye!"

Each morning Scott woke up early to feed Senator, leaving a note to remind Dad. After that Scott continued to sleep.

A week later, Lucy returned and told the family she failed. Then she found her dog sick. Scott felt sorry but confused, because he'd been a strict direction-follower.

They came to the animal hospital. After the examination, Lucy was angry, "A terrible stomachache! How could Senator put on two pounds in such a short time?"

Dad said, "I only fed him two scoops of dog food every morning."

Scott shouted, "Dad! You fed him again? Didn't you read my note? It says I've fed him!"

It took Lucy a while to understand before asking Scott how to spell "fed".

"F-e-e-d? Scott! ‘Fed' is spelled f-e-d. But your note says f-e-e-d, telling Dad to feed the dog!"

"So Senator was fed twice?" Dad asked.

Scott said sorry, "I just wanted to be responsible so I could get a dog for my next birthday."

"OK. I'll teach you how to spell correctly and train myself for next year's spelling bee," Lucy said.

"You have a few months to practice before you get one for your birthday," Dad added.

Scott burst into laughter.

"Having a little brother isn't so bad," Lucy told Senator, "if he can help f-e-e-d!"

 阅读理解

On Saturday morning, every boy in town was happy, except Tom Sawyer. Tom's aunt said he had to paint the fence(围栏). It was thirty yards(码) long and three yards high! When he was working, some boys came along and made fun of him.

Ben was the first one who came happily with an apple in his hand.

"I'm going swimming," said Ben. "Do you want to come? Oh, you have to work, don't you?"

Tom got a little angry, but soon he had a wonderful idea.

"Work?" he said. "I don't think this is work. It's fun. Does a boy get a chance like this every day?"

Ben thought about this. He was watching Tom's every move and was getting more and more interested.

After a while, he said, "Tom, will you let me do some painting?"

"No way. You see. Aunt Polly wants it to be done properly. I'm the only one that can do it right."

"Oh, please, Tom," begged(恳求) Ben." I'll be really careful. Let me try! I'll give you my apple in return."

"Well, all right, Ben," said Tom. "But you must be careful."

He gave Ben his brush with worry on his face but joy in his heart. He started to eat Ben's apple.

All day, boys passed by and wanted to paint. When Ben got tired, Billy began to paint. He gave Tom his favorite kite. Then Johnny gave him twelve marbles(玻璃球), and so on.

That afternoon, Tom got many toys, and the fence got three coats of paint. Aunt Polly was so pleased when she saw the painted fence that she gave Tom a large cake!
