As a new teacher at Doull Primary School in Denver, Kyle Schwartz thought of a simple way to get to know her third graders, most of whom came from 1 families. She asked them to complete the 2 “I wish my teacher knew…" and share something about themselves.

Their 3answers gave the teacher a chance to understand her students' difficulties. "I wish my teacher knew I have no pencils to do my homework," 4 one child. "I wish my teacher knew sometimes my reading homework is not signed(签名), because my mom is not 5 a lot,” wrote another. Some shared hope for the 6. " I wish my teacher knew that I want to go to college."

"Some notes are really heartbreaking," Schwartz tells ABC News. "I care 7 about each of my students and I don't want them to be poor forever." She explains, " I hoped to know 8I could better support them. So I 9 to let them tell me what I needed to know. That was why I created the fill-in-the-blank exercise."

10 the third graders were allowed to answer anonymously(匿名), most wanted to include names. And some were even excited to read their notes out loud. 11 one shy girl who bravely said that she was lonely. "After she told the class, "I don't have friends to 12 me, I was worried what they would do." Schwartz tells Us Weekly. "However, I felt encouraged to see how much support the other kids offered 13. They invited her to play at break and sit with them at lunch. You see, 14 have an unusual ability to express empathy(同情)."

 阅读理解

I am a Grade 9 student. I love the National Day holiday a lot, because I can do many things I enjoy. How did I spend the seven-day holiday last year? I didn't travel or visit friends. I found a part-time job.

That was the first time I had been a waiter (服务员). It was harder than I had thought. At first, I was not good at the job, and I nearly spilt (洒出) the soup on a woman's dress. Some people were very unfriendly, and they got angry ( 生气的) with me because of my mistakes. I was so sad and tired that I was almost ready to give up the first afternoon.

A family with three children came to have dinner the next day. The children were asking for things all the time. I tried my best to serve them well. Then the father said to me, "Good job! Thank you very much for helping us." His words were just like a light in the dark. My tiredness suddenly went away. In the following days, I got used to the job little by little, and I had fun working in the restaurant.

When I got the money at last, I felt very happy. The experience taught me that many jobs are not easy. Everyone is great when they are working hard. The most important thing I learned is how much praise (称赞) matters to people. It can give us lots of strength (力量). I think my National Day holiday last year was interesting and meaningful.

Tom and Mike were good friends, and they began to work in a company together the same year. They both worked hard. After several years, however, the boss made Mike manager (经理) but Tom was still an office worker. Tom couldn't stand it, so he handed a letter to his boss, saying that he decided to resign (辞职) his job because the boss didn't value his hard work at all.

The boss knew that Tom worked very hard for years. He thought for a moment and said, "I hope you will do one more thing for our company before you leave. Perhaps you will change your mind." Tom agreed. The boss asked him to go and find out if there was anyone who sold water-melons in the market. Tom returned soon. He said he had found a man selling watermelons. The boss asked the price of the watermelons. Tom shook his head and went back to the market again. When he returned, he told the boss it was $2 for each kilo.

The boss told Tom to wait for a moment in his office, and he called Mike in. He asked Mike to find if there was anyone selling watermelons in the market. Later Mike returned and said, "Only one man is selling watermelons, $2 for each kilo. He has 100 watermelons in all. Every watermelon weighs about 2 kilos. They were brought here two days ago, pretty fresh and sweet." Tom got to know the difference between Mike and himself. He decided not to resign his job any more.
