“Three apples have changed the world. One is for Eve, one is for Newton. The third is in the hands of Steve Jobs.” said someone.

Steve Jobs was the former CEO of the Apple computer company in his parents' garage (车库) on April Fool's Day, 1976. Through many years' hard work, Jobs and his Apple product s were a great success. People believe he has made the world a better place. Many young people also think of Apple products as a fashion icon.

Because of his great achievements in this area, he was honoured(给予荣誉) with a number of awards, including the National Medal of Technology in 1985, the Times cover character(封面人物) and the Most Successful Manager in 1997.

Jobs' road to success wasn't an easy one. He experienced several ups and downs, but he was still standing. Just as Hemingway in The Old Man and the Sea said, "A man can be destroyed, but not be defeated (打败). So he was considered as an American hero.

What did Jobs' workers and family members think of him?

On one hand, some workers described him as a strange, bad-tempered boss. They said he was impatient with those who disagreed with him or didn't understand his ideas. On the other hand, his family members thought of him as a home-loving dad with each of his four children. He worried about all the things of them, such as their boyfriends, travel, safety and even skirt length. Though he was quite busy, he still attended his daughter's graduation party.

Conor Grennan was unwilling to be a volunteer. The 29-year-old American was not sure if he had the skills or a strong feeling for it
However, he went to work at an orphanage(孤儿院) in Nepal. His first thought was to make people impressed.
"I thought that if I volunteered just once, I could retell the story over and over," Grennan said in a Huffington Post article
However, his three-month stay in the orphanage turned into an unusual experience. It was in 2004 and Grennan had given up his job to begin a year-long around-the-world trip. His first three months were spent in Nepal.
When he arrived in the village, he knew nothing about the children or the local culture. When he opened the gate of the Little Princes Children's Home, he was faced by the excited children.
The young American ended up caring for 18 children. He later discovered that they were trafficked(被拐卖的) children. So he walked through the mountains with great difficulty to find the kids' families. "I started walking with photos of the kids," he told the Reuter's reporter. "I would show up in villages and show photographs around. I went with 24 photos, and I found 24 families. "
At the same time, he put his heart into Nepalese culture.
Grennan said, "Volunteering is the single best way to see how the rest of the world lives."
He also encouraged others to do what he had done. He believes that volunteering needs only making decisions to show up.
Grennan's fight against child-trafficking has changed him. His book, Little Prince, came out last week.

Dear Liz,

My stay in Thailand has certainly been the experience of my life.

Life is busy and exciting.Bangkok is just like any other big city with a population of 10  million and heavy traffic.I'm very lucky because my host family is in a nice quiet area outside the city. There are Mr. and Mrs. Phairat, their son Sanan, who is 18, the daughter Chinda, who is 16, and Grandpa and Grandma.

I go to an international school with Sanan and Chinda. The school teaches about 70 percent in English, and 30 percent in Thai. I've learned some spoken language, but Thai writing is very difficult. The cooking lesson is my favourite.I'm learning all about Thai food and culture People don't use chopsticks here, but spoons and forks. When I come back,I'm going to cook you a real Thai meal.

Last weekend we visited some temples. We also drove to Pattaya beach near Bangkok.I thought it was great, but Sanan and Chinda say that next month they're taking me to Phuket  Island, where the beaches are even more beautiful. The month after next,we're going to travel to Mr.Phairat's hometown in the north of Thailand. The Phairats own land there, and they have two elephants.I'm going to ride those elephants — and even wash them.Sanan and  Chinda say it's really fun.I'm amazed by everything in this country, especially by the elephants.Elephants are an  important pan of Thai culture and way of life. They have been a traditional symbol(象征)of Thailand for many years in times of war and peace. In the seventh century,a Thai king trained 20,000 elephants for battle.

I'll tell you all about my Thai boxing(拳击)lessons next time I write.

Love,

Mandy
