It seems to us that Earth stands quite stable (稳定的). But it is really m{#blank#}1{#/blank#} all the time. It turns around a make-believe line through its centre. We c{#blank#}2{#/blank#} this make-believe line Earth's axis(轴). The t{#blank#}3{#/blank#} ends（尽头） of Earth's axis are its poles(极). It t{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Earth 24 hours to travel around its axis once. We look at the sun and say it ‘rises' and t{#blank#}5{#/blank#} across the sky, but the sun doesn't really do so. It is the turning of E{#blank#}6{#/blank#} that makes us feel that the sun were moving across the sky. We can't see the Earth is moving b{#blank#}7{#/blank#} everything on Earth is turning around it.

    As Earth moves around every 24 hours, the first half of Earth faces the sun and then the other h{#blank#}8{#/blank#}. When our half of Earth is f{#blank#}9{#/blank#} the sun, we say it is day. When our half is a{#blank#}10{#/blank#} from the sun, we say it is night. It is the turning of Earth that tells us when to get up and when to go to bed.

It was late last Monday, but Tom was still {#blank#}1{#/blank#} TV in his room. There was a wonderful football match on TV. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}  excited he was! That night he  {#blank#}3{#/blank#} go to bed until twelve o'clock. The next morning, it was a quarter to eight. It was {#blank#}4{#/blank#} late for Tom to get to school {#blank#}5{#/blank#} time. But he was still in bed. When Tom {#blank#}6{#/blank#} school, it was eight. The teacher was already beginning her lesson. As soon as Tom came into the classroom, she got  {#blank#}7{#/blank#} and said,"What time is it now, Tom "Tom felt sorry and could say  {#blank#}8{#/blank#} . In English class, he  {#blank#}9{#/blank#} a test. As he didn't know the lessons at  {#blank#}10{#/blank#} , Tom failed his English test.

    A dog entered a butcher's shop with a note in his mouth. The note read, "$10 of lamb chops(羊排), please. "

    The butcher was very {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(surprise). He took the money, put a bag of chops in the {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(dog) mouth, and then he closed the shop {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(quick). He followed the dog and watched him wait for a green light. Then the dog crossed the road to a bus stop. He checked the timetable and sat on the bench. When a bus arrived, the dog checked the number and got {#blank#}4{#/blank#}it.

    As the bus traveled out into the countryside, the dog enjoyed the scenery. After {#blank#}5{#/blank#}while, he stood on his back paws(爪子) {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(push) the "stop" button. Then the butcher followed {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(he) off.

    The dog ran up to a house and dropped his bag on the ground. He went back down the path, took a big run, and {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(throw) himself against the door. No answer. He repeated the action a few times. Then a big man opened the door {#blank#}9{#/blank#}Started complaining about the dog and beating him.

    Seeing this, the butcher ran up and shouted at the man, "What are you doing? This dog is a genius!" The man replied, "Genius? No way! He has forgotten his key for the {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (four) time this month!"

    The National Day holiday is one of {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(big) holidays in China. At this time, we have a week off {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(stay) with our family {#blank#}3{#/blank#} go on trips.

    The National Day holiday usually {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(begin) on 1 October and lasts till 7 October. If the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday falls within this period, the holiday period usually gets a day longer.

    The history of China's National Day

    On 1 October, 1949, Chairman Mao Zedong declared(宣布) the founding(成立) of the People's Republic of China in Tian'anmen Square. The next day, the new government passed the" Resolution on the National Day of the People's Republic of China" and declared 1 October to be {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Chinese National Day. Ever since then, our National Day {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(be) on 1 October every year.
