In common with other countries, Britain has serious environmental problems. In 1952, more than 4,000 people died in London because of the smog. The government introduced new laws to stop smog from coal fires and factories and the situation improved a lot.

      Today, London is much cleaner but there is a new problem: smog from cars. In December 1991, there was very little wind in London and pollution increased a lot. As a result, about 160 people died from pollution in just four days.

      One of the problem is the new "out of town" shopping centres. In the past, people often walked to shops near their homes or went by bus. Now, many people drive to the new shopping centres. Because the small shops have disappeared in the downtown, more people have to travel to do their shopping.

      Critics say that Britain needs better and cheaper public transport. Transport in Britain is very expensive. An early morning train trip from Glasgow to London (about 600km) can cost about £100, for example. A short 15-minute bus trip can cost over £1.00.

      Many people are trying to reduce the use of cars in Britain. Some cities now have special bicycle paths and many people cycle to work. Some people also travel to work together in one car to reduce the pollution and the cost.

    There are 24 solar terms (节气) in China, and the Grain Rain(谷雨) is one of them. It falls on April 19 this year.

    This solar term is called the Grain Rain because it is known for “rain” that helps the grain grow. From its name, we can guess it means a time of more rain. So if you go out in the next two weeks, you may need to bring an umbrella with you.

    But this is a great time for planting crops. If you miss the time for planting during the Grain Rain, you will feel sorry later. So maybe you can try to plant some flowers or vegetables in your garden. When the spring rain falls, farmers begin to grow crops (庄稼). Farmers often say, “Spring rain is as precious (珍贵的) as oil.” It brings farmers hope for a good year ahead.

    There are also many interesting customs during the Grain Rain. In the northern part of China, people like to eat Chinese toon (椿芽) mixed with eggs. The food made during the Grain Rain tastes wonderful and is good for your stomach. In the southern part of China, the tea leaves are picked during the time. They are called Grain Rain tea, which is famous for its freshness and sweet smell.

      Grace was fourteen years old and was in Grade Eight. She had a part-time job, so she had to get up at five o'clock. She was a newspaper girl.

      Each morning, Grace left the house at 5:15. She always rode a bike to the corner to carry the newspapers.

      In winter it was still dark when she got up, but during the rest of the day it was bright. Grace had to send newspapers to people's houses in all kinds of weather. She tried to put each paper in the box where it would be kept safe from wind, rain or snow. Her customers thought she did a good job. Sometimes they gave her tips(小费).

Since many of them worked during the day, Grace had to get the money at night. Sometimes when Grace was ill, her elder brother had to send the newspapers and Grace's father had to help her.

      Grace had 70 customers now, but she hoped to get more later. Some day, if she got more customers, perhaps Grace could win a prize for being a very good newspaper girl. She wanted to win a visit to Europe, but she would be happy if she won a new bike.

    Mr Turner was a famous writer. He was born in New York in a rich family on 13th September, 1941. His father came from England. He was a worker. His mother came from Australia and she worked as a doctor.

    When Mr Turner was seven, he began to go to school. He usually rode his bicycle to school. At school, he first wanted to be a manager. But at the age of fifteen, he decided to be a writer. In 1965, he wrote his first book and in 1967 he wrote his second book. After that he was famous all over America. At the age of thirty, Mr Turner married a woman from England. 然后他们去了英国并住在那里居住。 They had four children. Mr Turner died on 15th July, 2008.

    Everyone likes to have fun, but not everyone has much money to spend for it. Here are some free or cheap ways for you to enjoy yourselves.

    Try a hobby

    While you're out, take pictures of things you find. Taking pictures can make you notice the beauty around you. And you'll get interesting photos. If you don't have a camera or a mobile phone that can take pictures, you can try drawing. Drawing only needs a pencil and paper.

    Get outside

    Going outside in good weather can be a lot of fun, especially if you go with a friend. Hike or ride a bicycle in a park. If you live in a city, you can also go window shopping.

    Find an event

    Libraries often hold free public free events, stop by one to find out what's going on. And while you're there, borrow a book or movie for free. Museums and universities also hold free events.

    Meet a friend

    Relationships are the best things in life. Whatever you do, find someone to share it with. Invite a friend for a walk, an event or a time working on your hobby. If your friend comes in the afternoon, you don't have to serve a meal. You can sit and talk, play computer games or card games or watch a movie.
