I can well remember that I was once asked to deliver a speech titled "A Real Test in My Life” before the whole class at the age of 9! You can imagine how (terrible) shy I was with so many eyes (fix) upon me. I had no (choose) but to prepare for it, though.

First of all, I was to draft the speech, which was just a piece of cake for me, a good writer. But the hardest part (lie) in my oral presentation from my memory— for to read from the paper was not allowed. The real moment began I stood on the platform with my legs trembling and my mind blank. But my listeners were waiting patiently without any signs of rushing me. Gradually I found myself back, (deliver) my speech with difficulty. After what seemed to be a hundred years, I found my audience applauding— I made ! From then on, my fear of talking before an audience disappeared.

Actually with my (confident) building up I now turn out to be a great speaker. Looking back, I know the greatest difficulty on our way success is our fear. Overcome it we will be able to achieve our goals.

Tracy Wong is a well-known Chinese-American writer. But her writing skill was something she picked {#blank#}1{#/blank#} by herself. She became a part-time writer for IBM after {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(graduate) from college. Then, writing stories was {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(simple)a personal interest. Tracy sent three of her stories to a publisher. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(interest), they immediately suggested that she put them together {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(make)a single one long story and paid Tracy $ 50, 000 in advance, which was a pretty money for an unknown writer.

Even though Tracy's {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(character) are interesting, her stories sometimes leave readers uneasy: those about the supernatural. “My mother believed I could connect with the afterlife world,” she told a close friend. “She used to have me speak with my grandmother, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} died many years ago.”

"Can I? I don't think I can," Tracy said with a laugh. "But I do have moments when things come to me for no reason." Once, she {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(wonder) how to complete a scene set in ancient China when the doorbell suddenly rang. It was a FedEx delivery man, with a copy of a book on Chinese history. {#blank#}9{#/blank#} came without her having ordered it!

Though she has published 10 books, Tracy has remained unchanged by her fame. She lives in the same way she lived 27 years ago — although in a {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(big) house. There's more room for joy in her life — and it wasn't just writing.

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Once a group of {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (high) successful engineers got together to visit their old university professor, Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. While they were {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (talk), the professor went and prepared coffee in the kitchen. Then back with a pot of coffee and cups {#blank#}3{#/blank#} different kinds, some ordinary-looking, some expensive, some delicate, the professor told them to help {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(they) to hot coffee. When they all had a cup of coffee in their hands, he said, "If you noticed, all the nice-looking expensive cups {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(take)up, leaving behind the plain and cheap-looking ones. While it's normal for you to choose the best for yourselves, that's the source of your problems and stress. In {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(real), the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. What mattered most was coffee, not the cup, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} you went for the best cups directly and {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (bad) still, you began eyeing each other's cups. If life is coffee, then the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They're just tools {#blank#}9{#/blank#} hold and contain life, but the quality of life doesn't change. Sometimes by {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (concentrate) only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee in it."

Don't let the cups drive you, and enjoy the coffee instead.
