    I felt {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(luck) to have won a place to go on a cultural tour to sites of lost civilizations. We visited Pompeii in Italy and Loulan in China. Pompei {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(found) in the 8^th century BC, then taken{#blank#}3{#/blank#}by the Romans in 89 BC. Later, Pompei was destroyed by a volcano. It erupted and covered Pompei with ash.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (fortunate), many people were buried alive. The city was forgotten for many years until the 18^th century when a stone with writing on it was discovered by a farmer. People started to dig in the area {#blank#}5{#/blank#}treasure and caused much damage. Thus, in 1860, the area was governed by the government so {#blank#}6{#/blank#}could be preserved and studied.

    Differently, Loulan disappeared under the sand. There were just a few {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(ruin) left. There was {#blank#}8{#/blank#}ancient water system {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (run) through the middle of the city. The desert was once a green with huge trees, but they were cut down,{#blank#}10{#/blank#}resulted in the city being buried by sand.

    They were both important commercial cities about 2,000 years ago. It was a pity that they disappeared for ever.

Unlike some other European languages, English is a little tricky when it comes to writing. How a word{#blank#}1{#/blank#} (pronounce) and how it is actually spelt can be very different things. Take two simple{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(verb) like"have"and "save" shouldn't they be pronounced the same? Why do "sir", "her" and "fur" all rhyme, but "fork"and "work" don't?

Imagine, then, a situation{#blank#}3{#/blank#}two words are spelt and pronounced exactly the same way, but have{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(complete) different meanings. Welcome to the world of homonyms(同形同音异义词){#blank#}5{#/blank#} ( take), for example, the word "fair"- it can be a kind of festival or an adjective to describe the colour of your hair.

So how do you know which{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(mean) someone is referring to?— You don't, except by the context. Obviously, if someone asks you to "give them a hand", they don't want you to remove{#blank#}7{#/blank#}is at the end of your arm.

    Sometimes even the context doesn't help much- the result can be {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (amuse). These sentences play with the double meaning of a noun :I used to be a banker, {#blank#}9{#/blank#}I lost interest.

A small boy swallowed some coins and had to go to hospital when his grandmother phoned{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (ask) how he was, the nurse said, "No change yet."

"Waiter, will the bread be long?" "No, sir. It's round."

    I've been a volunteer at Radio Lollipop since May. It is one of the best experiences that I {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(have) in the last few years.

    Radio Lollipop is an international charity organization {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(found) in 1979 to provide care, comfort, games and entertainment for children in hospital. The service is provided{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(entire) by volunteers who have been specially selected and trained to make a child's stay in hospital more interesting and {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (little) frightened

    I help out regularly {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Monday evenings after work at the Royal Hospital. My task is to deliver a smile to the children at the wards (病房){#blank#}6{#/blank#}might be there for a few days or even a couple of months.{#blank#}7{#/blank#}is hard to find children on Monday, as the cinema at the hospital is open on that day. Most of them tend {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(be) there.

    I am thankful for this opportunity to help children at the hospital and make their stays more pleasant. The experience also helps me deal with the {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(difficulty) and challenges that I've been faced with in my own life. I am now more positive in helping others and realize {#blank#}10{#/blank#} everyone goes through some pain and suffers from time to time.

The Best Book I've Ever Read

    Frankly, I have read nearly all of the great works of literature, but no book has ever impressed me as deeply or directly {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Joel Stein's Man Made: A Stupid Quest for Masendinity.

    Haven't we all, on some level, been Jewish boys in New Jersey in {#blank#}2{#/blank#} 1970s with only female friends, an Easy-Bake oven and a strong preference for show tunes? Haven't we all had a panic attack {#blank#}3{#/blank#} learning we're going to have a son, since that means we're going to have to figure out how to throw footballs, watch other people throw footballs and decide {#blank#}4{#/blank#} to be happy or sad about the results of football throwing? Haven't we all then tried to correct our lack of maleness by becoming a man, fighting fires with firefighters, {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (drive) a Lamborghini and doing three days of Army training camp? I know I have.

    The only parts I didn't fully enjoy were {#blank#}6{#/blank#} in which the author suffered horribly. After just three hours of training camp, he fainted weakly into the arms of a soldier. The film rights to Man Made have already been sold to Fox, and I hope it gets {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (turn) into a movie with George Clooney playing the Stein role, since they remind me so much of each other.

    {#blank#}8{#/blank#} this is only Stein's first book, I would already consider him as someone like David Sedaris, Dave Barry, James Thurber, Mark Twain and Abraham Lincoln. I {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (recommend) Man Made not just to all my friends and family but also to strangers on Twitter over and over again. My one fear is {#blank#}10{#/blank#} after this great achievement, Stein will lose his ability to be a cruel critic of our shallow times.
