Though water does not seem all that exciting, it is very valuable. The Ancient Greek pecople believed all the fresh water on the Earth came from a river calld Okeanos. They imagined that clouds collected rain from its magical waters (海域). The reason they believed in this is because water is important for humans. Doctors say that without water we would die in about one week.

There are two places that our fresh water comes from. The first is surface water, which includes all the water in lakes or rivers. The second is groundwater, which refers to all the water that comes from under the ground.

Water must be treated before it can come out of the tap (水龙头). First, anything harmful in the water must be removed. Then a cleaning agent (净化剂) is added. This will destroy any remaining germs (细菌).

There have been reports of factories in China letting waste water leak into the ground. Industrial waste water is a big problem as it can pollute our drinking water. Even if the water is treated, it is unfit for drinking. The Ministry of Environmental Protection has improved the water in China since 2004. In 2011,76 percent of water was safe for dinking. But treated water should always be boiled before drinking.

Some countries have more fresh water resources (资源) and this means that it is easier for them to treat their water.

A report from a British Consulting Firm called Maplecroft found that Iceland has the best fresh water supply in the world.     Are you good with money? Do you get pocket money from your parents or do you work to make money? Read on to find out about British teenagers and their money!

    Pocket money

Most teenagers in Britain receive pocket money from their parents. They might have to do some housework to get pocket money, including cleaning, cooking, washing dishes and so on.

    Part-time work

A part-time job is a choice for teenagers who don't have pocket money or who want to get extra money. About 15% teenagers have a job. Only children over the age of 13 can work. Popular part-time jobs for teens include babysitting, delivering (递送) newspapers, restaurant work and shop work. Children in Britain can work two hours a day at the most on a school day but not during school hours. During weekends and school holidays, they can work longer hours.

    Bank accounts (账户)

Some children and teenagers have a bank account. There is no age limit at which you can open a bank account, but a bank manager can decide whether to open an account for a child or a young person. Parents can put pocket money directly into their child's bank account. Most banks have a prepaid bank card designed for young people.

    Mobile apps

Many companies have made mobile apps for children, including GoHenry, Osper and Gimi. Parents can add money to their children's accounts and check to see how the money is spent. Children can choose to save their money or spend it using a card. The apps suggest that kids from 8 to 13 can use the cards.

So, many teenagers are getting experience working part-time, dealing with banks and deciding whether to save or spend their money. These are all steps towards becoming a financially independent (经济独立的) person and making and looking after your own money.

Benjamin Banneker was born a few months before another great American—George Washington. Benjamin was black, but he was not a slave (奴隶). He and his mother and his grandmother were free. Benjamin's grandmother came from England. In America she got a job and worked for many years to pay for her boat trip across the ocean. After working many years, she saved enough money to buy a farm. Benjamin lived with her for a while. She taught him to read, write and do arithmetic (算术).

Benjamin's neighbours knew that he was clever. They were not surprised when he built a large wooden clock. He made each piece after studying a small pocket watch. The clock made him famous, for it was one of the first clocks built in America. People from other places began to send hard problems of all kinds to Benjamin to settle.

Thomas Jefferson heard of Benjamin Banneker's ability to settle hard problems. He asked Banneker to help build the city that was to be the capital of the United States—Washington, D.C. Banneker worked hard on the plans for the city. He marked where the streets and buildings—the Capitol (美国国会大厦), the White House, and many other places should be built.

Later, L' Enfant, the Frenchman who had designed the new city, had a quarrel, and went back to France in anger. He took all of the plans away. The workmen couldn't build without any plans to follow.

For a while it seemed that the plans for the capital might have to be changed, but Benjamin Banneker remembered the plans he had helped draw. He drew each again as he had built each piece of his clock.

If it weren't for Benjamin Banneker, Washington,

D.C might look very different from the way it does today.
