I work as a volunteer for an organization that helps the poor in Haiti. Recently I took my son Barrett there for a week, hoping to  1  him. Before setting out, I told Barrett this trip would be tiring and   2  . For the first two days, he said almost nothing. I worried the trip was too much for a 17-year-old boy. Then on day three, as we were climbing  3    high rocky mountains, he turned to me and grinned (咧嘴笑), "Pretty hard."

    After that there was no turning back. A five-year-old girl, wearing a dress several sizes   4  large and broken shoes, followed Barrett around, mesmerized (着迷). He couldn't stop   5   . Later he said regretfully . "I   6   I could speak French." I was  7－this from a boy who hated and    8   French classes throughout school.

       Usually silent, he made friends with Gaby, our host, and kept asking questions about the country and its people. He came alive

      However, the moment that really took 9    breath away happened during my interview with a woman villager for an article at her house deep in the mountains. 135 centimeters tall, she was small in figure but strong in 10  . Through determination(决心), she had learned to read and write and 11  to become part of the leadership of the village .    her story, Barrett was as touched as I by this tiny woman's achievements. His eyes were wet and 12  was a mixture of love and respect on his face. He had finally understood the importance of my work.  13       When leaving for home, Barrett  13offered to stay behind as a volunteer. My insides suddenly felt struck. This   14  achieved all I'd expected. Soon he will celebrate his 18th birthday. He'll be a man.

    A female swimming athlete once set a goal ( 目标) for herself. She decided to swim across the English Channael before she retired. If she could succeed, she would be the first person in the world {#blank#}1{#/blank#} did it. On that day ,she jumped into the sea without any hesitation(犹豫) and swam towards the opposite bank without any {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. In the journey, she faced heavy fog, heavy rain and heavy waves. Though she was {#blank#}3{#/blank#} , she still carried on swimming. But in the end, she gave up. And she didn't know that the opposite bank was only one mile away when she gave up.

    Later she was {#blank#}4{#/blank#} about the reason. And she said, "The reason why I gave up is that I could not see the place which I was going to reach  {#blank#}5{#/blank#}" It was a great pity that one mile broke her dream.

    Since we were young {#blank#}6{#/blank#} , too many success stories have been telling us about courage and persistence(坚持). But they never told us where to {#blank#}7{#/blank#} courage and persistence. You can only have courage when you know where your goal is. You can only manage to persist when you know where your goal is.

    And that's because when you know where your goal is, you can, only prepare {#blank#}8{#/blank#} well in the mind. Courage and persistence never {#blank#}9{#/blank#} from the sky. They come from weighing between input and output.

    A life without goal is {#blank#}10{#/blank#} a ship without a compass. It goes nowhere. There is no courage or persistence in a life without goals.

    Jen Morgan is a music therapist (治疗专家). She works with children with disabilities (缺陷). Jen {#blank#}3{#/blank#}music to help them learn new things. She can also help them with their {#blank#}4{#/blank#}and memory (记忆力).

    There are different {#blank#}5{#/blank#} for doing music therapy. Jen gets the children to listen to music and sing or play along. The children also enjoy moving to the music. Jen asks them to try to {#blank#}6{#/blank#}songs they like, too.

    Jen writes songs and uses them in her therapy work. "I've probably written more than 200 songs," she says. "I write songs about {#blank#}7{#/blank#} about getting dressed, about flowers, about my favorite food—you name it Sometimes the children help me write songs."

    Jen loves her job {#blank#}8{#/blank#}a music therapist "I'm very lucky to have this job," she says. It's {#blank#}9{#/blank#}to see how music can help children with disabilities. Often children are {#blank#}10{#/blank#} when I first meet them. But they soon start having fun and enjoying the music. Music makes people feel good!
