A young and successful man was driving down a street in his new Jaguar (捷豹汽车). He was going too fast. As his car passed, a brick (砖块) knocked into the Jaguar's side door. He was very angry and drove the car back to the place where the brick had been thrown. The angry driver jumped out of the car and stopped the nearest kid, shouting, "Who are you? What are you doing? That's a new car and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money. Why did you do that?"

The young boy was apologetic. "I'm sorry. I didn't know what else to do," he said. "I threw the brick because no one else would stop."

With tears dropping down his face, the young boy pointed to a place just around a parked car. "It's my brother," he said, "he fell out of his wheelchair (轮椅) and I can't lift him up."

Crying, the boy asked the man, "Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me." Moved deeply, the driver hurriedly lifted the disabled boy into the wheelchair.

"Thank you and God bless you," the thankful child told the man. And the man simply watched the little boy push his brother down the sidewalk toward their home.

It was a long and slow walk back to the Jaguar. The dent (凹痕) was very noticeable, but the driver didn't want to repair the side door. He kept the dent there to remind him of this message: Don't go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention.

举一反三
It's not easy to be an astronaut's son.Everybody expects you to be special or perfect. I often wonder how my father ever had a son like me. I mean he's so special and so good at everything he does. Even in middle school he was monitor and captain of the football team.
Well, to be honest, I often dream about being some kind of hero or doing something special—like saving a child from a burning building One morning my teacher said there would be a Father's Day writing competition for the whole school.“I hope we have a winner right here in my class.”
When I got home,I started to think about what to write. My father is an astronaut. No, I wouldn't start like that. That was the way others saw him.How did I see my father?
Hmm…I saw him sitting with me in the dark when I had a terrible dream.I remembered how he hugged me for hours when my dog Spotty was killed by a car. Yes, these were the things I was going to write. To me,he wasn't just a famous astronaut. He was my dad.
My parents and l went to school Thursday night. There were so many people in the big hall! My dad looked at me, and I shrugged(耸肩).
The third prize was announced and it was not me.I was relieved(释然)and disappointed(失望) at the same time. The second prize was announced. I t was me. I went up to the stage and read what I had written,“My father's son”.When I finished,Dad put his hand on my shoulder.“Son,this is the proudest moment of my life."
It was the proudest moment of my life, too. Maybe I'll never be a great hero or win a Nobel Prize, but it was enough just to be my father's son.

Mr. Brown works in New York and he brought his family to China last summer. They visited many places of interest and had a good time here. Before they left for New York, the Browns climbed the Great Wall. It was the greatest project over two thousand years ago. They took a lot of photos there and then they had a picnic under a big tree. Suddenly it began to rain and they hurried to the car. And when they returned to the hotel, they couldn't find the bag in which their expensive camera was. They were all sorry for it. They could buy another camera but had no time to go to the Great Wall again. They could not miss the plane!
That evening they didn't have supper. Mr. Brown hoped to make them happy, so he said, “Well, let me tell you a story. An old man lived in a sixty-floor building. One day he fell down from it when he was cleaning the window. But he didn't hurt himself.”
“It was a miracle (奇迹)!” called out his children, “Why?”
“Because he lived on the first floor!”
They all began to laugh while two policemen with a bag came in. They said a Chinese boy found it under a big tree and he asked them to find out who lost it.
“It's really a miracle!” the Browns said happily.

When Matty Sallin,34,was working on a degree in art and technology at New York University,he got interesting homework in electronics class. He decided to create an alarm clock(闹钟).

"Everybody has to deal with these every day,and they are really unpleasant!"he says.He asked different people what they would like to wake up to instead of a noisy alarm.A lot of them said,"The smell of bacon(培根肉)".

So Sallin and two classmates invented a new kind of alarm clock:a wooden box with a pig face and a digital clock that uses the smell of cooking bacon instead of the sound to wake someone up.He explains."There's no danger of burning, because I built it carefully. It uses halogen light bulbs(卤素灯)instead of a fire for cooking and turns off automatically after ten minutes.Yes,the clock itself can do it.Just a few easy steps are needed to set the alarm."

"What you do is to put some frozen bacon in the night before and set the alarm,"says Sallin.

"If you set the alarm for 8:00,it will turn on at 7:50 and slow cook for ten minutes under the halogen bulbs."he says,Then the bulbs turn off and a fan blows the smell out through the nose of the pig.

"So instead of an alarm,  ▲,"says Sallin."Then you can open the door on the side and pull the bacon out and eat it."

When Sallin was a kid,he spent a lot of time making drawing of inventions."I wanted to make an lift in my backyard and a special tree house."he says."But I never really thought I'd be called an inventor!"

Sallin got an A in the class and went on to other things—but people continue to hear about his invention and email him every day asking where they can buy his alarm clock.
