After that, we went on down the river. It was very dark that night and it wasn't easy to see where we were going. Suddenly, a big steamboat came at us very fast, and the next minute it was right over us. Jim and I jumped off the raft (木筏) into the water. The boat hit the raft and went on up the river.

When I came up out of the water, I couldn't see Jim anywhere. I called out his name again and again, but there was no answer. “He's dead!” I thought. Slowly, I swam to the side of the river and got out. I saw that I was near a big old wooden house. Suddenly a lot of very angry dogs jumped out at me. They made a terrible noise and someone called from the house, “Who's there?”

“George Jackson,” I answered quickly. “I've fallen off a river boat.”

Well, the people who lived in that house were very kind, and they took me in and gave me some new clothes and a good meal. I told them that my family were all dead, so they said I could stay with them as long as I wanted. It was a beautiful house and the food was good there, so I stayed.

A few days later one of the slaves in the house came to me and said, “Come with me!” Together, we went down to some trees by the river. “In there!” he said and went away.

On the ground, I found a man, asleep. It was Jim! I was really pleased to see him. When the steamboat hit the raft, Jim told me, the raft didn't break up. Jim swam after it and caught it. Then he began to look for me.

We decided to leave at once. It's all right living in a house for a little while, but you feel more free and easy and comfortable on a raft.

Yao Beina was not only a popular singer but also an energetic and warm-hearted angel. She donated her corneas (眼角膜) to two men after her death.

Yao was born in a music family in September 1981 in Wuhan. Shestarted to learn music at the age of 4, and she sang her first song on the

stage when she was 9. Yao did quite well in singing, so she took part in the 13th Youth Singing Competition and won the first prize.

She became well-known to the public after making some songs for the hit TV drama “The Legend of Zhenhuan”( 甄嬛传）, and the mandarin version (中文版本) of “Let It Go” from Disney's “Frozen"（冰雪奇缘）.

In July 2013, she competed in The Voice of China II and finally got the second place in Na Ying's team. She had won many music prizes.

Yao Beina was unlucky to be diagnosed（诊断）with breast cancer (乳腺癌). She had a successful operation（手术） in 2011. She has fought against the illness for about four years while keeping singing, but sadly she failed. Although she's gone, her fans will remember her beautiful voice and kindness for ever.

    One day, many years ago, when I was working as a psychologist(心理学家) in England, David was brought into my office. His face was pale（苍白的）and he looked at his own feet.
    David lost his father when he was two years old and lived with his mother and grandfather ever since. But the year before he turned 13, his grandfather died and his mother was killed in a car accident. His teacher told me that he refused to talk to others from then on.

I arrived in the UK last weekend to learn English. So far I have already made a few friends and had some traditional English food there. But after having three days of hamburgers, sandwiches and potatoes, I thought none could be more delicious than Chinese food , especially my favorite—huo guo. You can't imagine how excited I was when I got to know that there was going to be a free meal of hotpot to welcome the new students. On the way to the canteen, I seemed to smell huo guo in the air.

To my surprise, when I went into the room I didn't see any of huo guo. Where was it? With many questions in my mind, I sat down to have the free meal. After talking with an English girl, I got to know that Chinese huo guo is completely different from hotpot. Chinese huo guo is written in two words—hot pot, and hotpot, one word, is a traditional English dish.

Hotpot is made from mutton and onion. On the top are pieces of potatoes. People put it in the oven all day in a heavy pot on a low heat. It takes very little effort to prepare. You can often see it at parties in the UK because it's easy to prepare for a large number of people and is not expensive.

Hotpot doesn't taste bad. However, I still miss huo guo—hot pot, two words!
