Mike gets up at half past seven. He has an egg and some milk for breakfast. Then he goes to school. When he is on his way to school, he is thinking, “I told my teacher that my mother w as ill on Monday. I told him my bike didn't work on my way to school on Tuesday. What should I say today? Mike thinks it over, but he doesn't have a good idea.

  “May I come in?” says Mike at the door.

  “Oh, my boy,” says Mr. Brown. “Please look at the clock on the wall. What time is it now?” “It's eight ten,” says Mike. Mr. Brown is not happy and says, “You are late for class three times this week. If all the students are like you, the clock is no use, I think.” “You are wrong, Mr. Brown,” says Mike. “If I don't have the clock how do I know I am late for school?”

    Once there was a parrot on sale in a pet store. It was a beautiful red and blue bird.  It sat on a perch in the middle of the store so that everyone could see it when they came in. The owner was very proud of it and asked a high price for it.

    One day a man went into the store. "That's a beautiful bird," he said to the pet store owner. "But why is it so expensive? Is it an unusual bird?"

    "No, it's not very unusual. It's expensive because it can talk," the pet store owner said.

    "I see. How can I make it talk?" the man asked.

    The pet store owner asked him, "Do you see those strings tied to each of the bird's legs?"

    "Yes," the man answered.

    "Well, you pull those strings," the pet store owner told him."That will make the parrot talk."

    The man asked, "Do you mind if I try?"

    "Not at all," the pet store owner said.

    The man walked up to the parrot and pulled the string on its left leg. The parrot said, "Good morning."

    The man pulled the string on the parrot's right leg. This time the parrot said, "How are you today?"

    "That's not very interesting," said the man."Any parrot could do that." Then he laughed, "But what would happen if I pulled both strings at the same time?"

    "I'll fall off my perch, you fool!"the parrot said.

    Tom is a very old man. After dinner, he likes walking in the street. And be goes to bed at seven o'clock.

    But this evening, a car stops at his house. A policeman helps him get out. He tells Tom's wife(妻子), "The old man can't find his way in the street. He asks me to take him in the car."

    After the policeman leaves, his wife asks, "Tom, you go to the street every night, but today you can't find the way. Why? ”

    The old man smiles like a child and says, "I can't find my way? I don't want to walk home because I'm too tired."

    Tom goes to see his grandparents with his father. On the train, Tom often puts his head out of the window. His father says, "Tom, don't put your head out of the window. ''But Tom goes on putting his head out of the window.

    His father takes Tom's hat quietly, hides(藏)it behind his back and says to Tom, "You see, your hat is gone(消失)."Tom is afraid. His father says, "Well, whistle once. Maybe your hat will come back. "Tom whistles. His father puts the hat on Tom's head quickly. "Oh! It's wonderful! "Tom laughs and says. He quickly takes his father's hat and throws it out of the window. "Now it's your turn to whistle, Dad!" he says happily.

    Vera is thirteen years old. She was born on July 27th. Mrs. Smith is her mother. Today is Vera's birthday. There is a party for her, Lots of her friends come to her birthday party. A birthday cake is on the table. There are some bananas, oranges, strawberries and apples on the table, too. But Vera doesn't like them. What does she want? Can you guess?

    Just then Vera sees a red card in her mother's hand. It says, "Happy birthday to you, dear(亲爱的) Vera. There is a nice present for you. Open the box on your dresser, you can find it."

    Vera runs to her dresser and opens the box. Ah, a nice T shirt! How glad she is!

    One day, John read an advertisement in a newspaper. It said "Wanted. The best salesman in the world." John thought he was a great salesman and went to ask for the job. "I'm the best salesman in the world," he said to the manager. "Give me the job."

   "You must prove you're the best," the manager said.

   "OK I will," John said.

   "Good." The manager took several boxes of sweets out of his desk." Last week I bought a thousand boxes of sweets. If yon can sell them all before the end of the week, yon can have the job," said the manager.

   "That's easy," John said. He took the boxes of sweets and left the office.

    Every day and all day he went from shop to shop, trying to sell the sweets. But he couldn't sell one. The sweets were too bad for him to sell. At the end of the week he went back to the manager." I'm sorry, sir," he said," I was wrong about myself. I'm not the best salesman in the world, but I know who is."

   "Oh" said the manager. "Who?"

   "The person who sold you a thousand boxes of the sweets."
