Lasting a Lifetime

Sidney Wilson's watch was old and it did not work well. It was either too fast or too slow. It spent more time in the repair shop than on his wrist (手腕). So he decided to buy himself a new watch.

He went into a jewelry shop and said to the saleswoman behind the counter.

“I want to buy a new watch, please. Show me the best watch you have.”

The saleswoman smiled happily. This was the kind of customer she liked.

“Certainly, sir,” she said, and showed Sidney a gold watch.

“This watch is made of gold and has twenty-four jewels,” she explained.

“How much is it?” Sidney asked.

      “$5,000,” the saleswoman said.

“Oh,” Sidney said. “I'm sorry. You did not understand me. I want to see the best watch you have for under $100.”

The sales woman now lost interest in Sidney. She pushed some cheap watches at him. “Choose one from these,” she said rudely.       “They are all under $100.”

Sidney picked up one of the watches, “Will it last me a lifetime?” he asked.

     “Of course,” the saleswoman said.

“Then I'll buy it,” Sidney told her. He paid for the watch and left the shop.

Two days later the watch stopped. Sidney could not make it work again. He took it back to the shop.

“This watch is broken,” he said to the saleswoman. “You told me it would last me a lifetime.”

“When you bought it, sir,” the saleswoman said, “you didn't look very well.”

It's not easy to be an astronaut's son.Everybody expects you to be special or perfect. I often wonder how my father ever had a son like me. I mean he's so special and so good at everything he does. Even in middle school he was monitor and captain of the football team.
Well, to be honest, I often dream about being some kind of hero or doing something special—like saving a child from a burning building One morning my teacher said there would be a Father's Day writing competition for the whole school.“I hope we have a winner right here in my class.”
When I got home,I started to think about what to write. My father is an astronaut. No, I wouldn't start like that. That was the way others saw him.How did I see my father?
Hmm…I saw him sitting with me in the dark when I had a terrible dream.I remembered how he hugged me for hours when my dog Spotty was killed by a car. Yes, these were the things I was going to write. To me,he wasn't just a famous astronaut. He was my dad.
My parents and l went to school Thursday night. There were so many people in the big hall! My dad looked at me, and I shrugged(耸肩).
The third prize was announced and it was not me.1 was relieved(释然)and disappointed(失望) at the same time. The second prize was announced. I t was me. I went up to the stage and read what I had written,“My father's son”.When I finished,Dad put his hand on my shoulder.“Son,this is the proudest moment of my life.''
It was the proudest moment of my life, too. Maybe I'll never be a great hero or win a Nobel Prize, but it was enough just to be my father's son.

Sally was a student. It was going to be her mother's birthday. She wanted to buy her a gift that would be nice and useful but not expensive.

A week before her mother's birthday, she went shopping after a quick and simple lunch. When she had been looking for half an hour, she found a shop that was selling cheap umbrellas, and decided to take a black one, since her mother had lost hers the month before.

She thought, “You could carry that when you are wearing clothes of any color.” So she decided to buy a lovely black umbrella and took it back to school with her until her classes had finished.

On her way back home in the train that evening, she felt hungry because she had such a small lunch that she went along to the buffet car(餐车) for another sandwich and cup of coffee. She had left the black umbrella above her seat in the compartment(车厢), but when she got back, it had gone! When she had left the compartment, there had been no other passengers in it, but now there were three.

Sally began to cry when she saw that the umbrella was no longer there. The other passengers felt very sorry for her and asked what the matter was. She told them that the black umbrella she had bought for her mother was gone, and that she had to get out at the next station. After the three other passengers heard it, they asked her for her mother's address so that they could sent the umbrella to her if someone had taken it by mistake and brought it back after Sally had got out of the train.

The next week, Sally heard from her mother. It said, “Thank you very much for your lovely gifts, but why did you send me three black umbrellas?”

A Teacher's Gift

That day I arrived at my class in the morning. Immediately I felt upset and uncomfortable. Today was the day when our teacher would leave and move to another school.

Mr. Smith was very easy to talk with and to have fun with. He was cool, relaxed, and was always friendly when you would see him. I couldn't even imagine how things were going to be without him.

"Thank you everyone for my time here. I will forever keep these memories and friendships I've made in the past five years." He took a deep breath and said," As a moment for me leaving, please look under your seats."

Confused, I slowly checked under my seat to see a yellow block of wood that read "Love" on it .I quickly got it and began to study it. After seconds of watching the block, I realized that it was a Jenga block(积木块)

Tears ran down my face and fell on the Jenga block. I heard my classmates sobbing(抽泣)That was to say, everyone in my class had a Jenga block with the word "Love". We hadn't found a way to express our sadness and also we couldn't find a way to express our love to the respectable man. "This is a reminder to always love others." Mr. Smith said slowly.

Maybe that day wasn't the worst day, and it was just a moment of my life and l was too young to understand Mr. Smith. What Mr. Smith taught us is that whenever and wherever we are. We should love others. The Jenga block acts as a reminder, encouraging me to give a hand to those in need of help. As time goes on, "Love" others has been a habit
