The hippo(河马) is the most dangerous animal in Africa, but that hasn't stopped a South African animal lover from making friends with one.

    Marius Els is 40 years old. He 1 around 20 different kinds of animals on his ranch(饲养场), in South Africa. He has a real soft spot for Humphrey, a 6-year-old hippo that's like a son to him. While all of his friends are too 2 to go near the animal, and his wife told him not to get too close, Marius climbs on Humphrey's back as he swims 3 the lake.

    Marius has kept the hippo 4 he was just five months old. And over the years, the two have 5 a special relationship that people just don't understand. Marius looks on Humphrey as a son, although the 1, 200 ton animal could 6 a person with ease. Only sometimes the hippo can throw Marius off his 7 in the water. Humphrey is very friendly to his owner, especially after Marius offers him a dinner of his favorite 8, apples.

    Humphrey feels very 9 in his life. He had another good friend, a goat, but she got eaten by a jackal, so now he's all by 10. Marius says he's been trying to get a female friend for Humphrey, but there's no such thing in Africa right now.

There are different opinions about who invented the umbrella. Some people say that the people of ancient Egypt invented it, some say the Romans invented it and some say Luban's wife invented it in ancient China. There's even an interesting story about its invention in China.

Luban was the most famous craftsman(工匠) in ancient China. One day, Luban and his wife were taking a walk and enjoying the beautiful view. Suddenly it began to rain. Both of them were wet when they went back home. Luban's wife said, "If there is something that can protect people from the rain when they are walking outdoors, it will be wonderful." Then Luban said,"That's easy. I will build many pavilions(亭子)." His wife replied, "That's a good idea, but it is not convenient.Is it possible to make a movable pavilion, which could always follow the people?"She thought about it all day and night.

One day, she saw some kids playing in the rain, and each kid held a big lotus leaf over the head to protect themselves from getting wet. That gave her great inspiration. Then, she made the first umbrella in ancient China.

Since the umbrella was invented, it has been part of people's lives in every corner of the world. Right now, there are many kinds of umbrellas, such as beach umbrellas, kid umbrellas and market umbrellas.

How many umbrellas are made every year in the world? Maybe millions or even more. One interesting thing is that most umbrellas in the world are made in China. Shangyu in ZhejiangProvince alone has more than 1,000 umbrella factories and it is called"China's Umbrella City".

My name is Helen. I study at a middle school in Nanjing. My school is not far away from my home, so I usually go to school on foot. Sometimes, I go there in my father's car. My school is nice. Of all the buildings, I like the school library best. It's a new building in my school It's so big. It has four floors. Every school day, it's Open from 9 am to 6 pm. I like storybooks best. And I also like geography books. Every month, there are interesting activities in the library. I love them too. 

 One lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always.

I had been picked to be the 1  in the school play. My mom helped me2  my lines over and over again. But no matter how well I said my lines at home, as soon as I got on the stage,I 3  all my words.

 Finally, my teacher explained that she had written a narrator's(旁白) part, and asked me to change4 .

I didn't tell my mother what had happened 5 I went home for lunch that day. But she noticed I was 6  , so she didn't ask me to practice my lines. Instead, she invited me to take a walk with her in the7 .

 It was a lovely spring day, and the leaves of rose plants were getting 8 . In the grass, we saw lots of yellow dandelions(蒲公英) popping up. My mom stopped 9  a group of plants. "I think I am going to clear out all the other 10 , and then we will only grow roses in this garden."

"I don't really want to remove them, because I like dandelions," I argued. "All flowers are beautiful!" My mother 11  me seriously." Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, and that's 12 of people too," she said. "Not everyone can be a princess, but it's okay not to be one."

 Relieved that she had guessed my sadness, I started to 13  as I told her what had happened. "But you will be an excellent narrator," she said, The narrator is as 14 as the princess."

 In the coming weeks, she kept cheering me on, and I started to take pride in the new role. Lunchtimes were spent reading over15 lines and talking about what I would wear.

 It was about 1:00 in the morning. It was bright light in my neighbor's kitchen. I thought he might be having midnight food so I went back to my bed. Soon, there was a burning smell and I realized there must be something wrong. I jumped out of bed at once and went to have a look. I saw fire coming out of his kitchen. I shouted, "Fire! Fire!" But nobody heard me. I ran quickly to my house and called the Fire Department(消防队) and went back to my neighbor's house.

I knocked at the door and called my neighbor's name, but there was no answer. I tried to break into the house and saved a cat and a chicken. Then I poured water through the kitchen window but it was no use, because the fire was too big. Luckily, the firemen arrived and put out the fire in time.

 When my neighbor came back, he was sad because his kitchen was burnt down, but he thanked me for calling the Fire Department and saving his pets.

A week later, my neighbor invited me to his home for dinner. In his new kitchen, he took a photo of me. Later on, he gave me the photo as a gift. It made me happy.
