In a nice house there lived an old man. Behind the house there was a big garden. He planted many plants there. He took care of his flowers all the time, watering and fertilizing (施肥) them.

       One day a young man went by the garden. He looked at the beautiful flowers, imagining how happy he could be if he lived in such a beautiful place. Then, suddenly he found the old gardener was blind. He was very _________ about this and asked, “You can't see these flowers. Why are you busy taking care of them every day?”

       The old man smiled and said, “I can tell you some reasons  . First, I was a gardener when I was young, and I really like this job. Second, although I can't see these flowers, I can touch them. Third, I can smell the sweetness of them. As to the last one, that's you.”       

       “Me? But you don't know me,” said the young man.

       “Yeah, it's true that I don't know you. But I know that flowers are angels that everybody knows. We enjoy the happiness these flowers have brought us.”

       The blind man's work opened our eyes and pleased our heart, which also made his life happier. It was just like Beethoven, who became deaf in his later life and wrote many great musical words. Beethoven himself couldn't hear  his wonderful music, but his music has encouraged millions of people to face their difficulties bravely. Isn't it one kind of happiness?

    Sydney Fredette is very busy. Not only is she a high school student, but she has also set up her own organization（组织）, Beary Merry Christmas. She volunteers(志愿) to offer services to poor children and families in Orange Country in California, US.

    To remember her best friend who died of cancer nearly 10 years ago, Fredette decided to offer services to those in Orange Country who are less lucky than she is.

    She began with the easy idea of collecting donated(捐赠) Build-A-Bears, the popular toy animal that is made by children themselves in the stores' workshops. Fredette then gave them as presents to the homeless children in California during the holiday season.

    With donations at more than 100 bears a year, Fredette and volunteers hold activities every year, where volunteers not only give out the bears, but also clothing, meals, and other things.

    Not wanting to limit(限制) the giving to just the holiday months, Fredette held other activities for Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Halloween, offering the chance to her volunteer team to make a difference through the year.

    "I love making friends with the people I offer services to," Fredette said. "It's so cool to hear their stories and see how happy they are."

    Fredette even built a public food bank and offered a self-development class to students in her school.

    She plans to stay local and continue to help out in her hometown.

Cliff is a businessman. He is very rich but he doesn't feel happy. One day, he was driving his car around town, looking at the people through the window. Suddenly, he saw 1 lonely man sitting in a square, and he was smiling. He drove past2 .

A long time ago, there was an apple tree. A little kid enjoyed playing around it and taking a rest under it. Also, he wanted to pick some apples from the tree. As a 5-year-old boy, he was short so he 1 to climb to the top of the tree to get the apples and ate them. He really had fun playing with the tree. He loved the tree and the tree loved him at that time.

Time went by. The boy 2 and he didn't play with the tree. One day, the boy came back to the tree. "Come and play with me." the tree said.

"I dislike playing around the tree now. I want toys. Toys are more interesting for me. I need money to buy them."

"I don't have money, but you can pick my apples and sell them." The boy was happy and climbed the tree and picked all the apples 3 the tree and left.

After a long time, the boy was already a man. He was much taller than before. He could touch the branches (树枝) of the tree 4 without climbing up. He came back to the tree. "I need a house for my family."

"You can cut my branches to build one." 5 the boy cut all the branches of the tree and left. He didn't come back. The tree missed him so much and felt sad.

On a hot day, the boy came back after many years. "Sorry, my boy. I have 6 for you. I'm old." "I just need a place to rest. I am 7 after all these years." The boy sat down and the tree smiled with tears (泪水).
