Katrina lived with her parents in a small white house. All the
other houses in the neighborhood looked the same except the house next door to
Katrina's. This house had broken windows and needed new paint. Everyone who
lived in the area thought this house looked awful.
One Saturday morning,
Katrina saw a man, a woman, and a boy get out of a truck and move into the
house.
On Monday morning,
Katrina left for school as usual. As she entered the classroom she heard the
teacher say "This is David. Let's give him a warm welcome." Katrina
recognized him right away. He was the boy who had just moved into the house
next to hers. The teacher asked Katrina to show him around the school.
At lunchtime, Katrina
showed David the way to the lunchroom. As they ate their lunch, David told Katrina
he was excited to be living in his new house. Katrina looked surprised and
asked,
"Don't you think it
needs a lot of fixing?"
David explained that he
and his parents had spent the weekend making plans. They wanted to fix the
house so that it would look like all the other houses in the neighborhood. They
knew it would take a lot of time and hard work. They felt, it would be worth
it. They had never owned their own house or lived in such a nice neighborhood.
Katrina realized she was
very lucky. She had always lived in a nice neighborhood. Listening to
David's story made her feel thankful for all that she had.
