In the 1930s, Dan West was farming in Spain. It was wartime, and people were getting very hungry. As he handed out cups of milk to children, an idea hit him. "These children don't need a cup. They need a cow." This was the start of Heifer International.

    Send Some Cows

Do you think a nice gift is a bike or a CD? Heifer International gives different kinds of presents. Its presents might say "quack" or "moo." Dan West asked friends in the United States to give gifts of heifers (小母牛), or young cows. Since then, Heifer International has given animals to four million families. It gives people the chance to feed themselves.

    ______________

Heifer International wants the people they help to help others. For one project, the group sent chickens to some children in Asia. The children looked forward to the day when they could help others. Nine-year-old Julie said, "I want other girls like me to take care of chickens and their families. I want to share and give many away." Julie knew she had to tend to her chickens well so they would make new eggs and healthy chicks. She took good care of them, and they gave birth to strong, healthy chicks. Julie then passed on the gift of chicks to other families.

    Let Children L earn

Because of Heifer International, children can spend their days in a schoolhouse instead of working in the fields. They can use the money they get from their animals to pay for school.     We were on a visit to Monkey Island. Jim thought we should try water skiing(滑水).

We can get a boat and ski at Monkey Island.

Don't go water skiing near Monkey Island today,” said the woman standing near the boats. “There might be sharks(鲨鱼) in the water.”

“I don't think so.” said Jim who thought he knew everything.

“I wouldn't go water skiing in the sea near Monkey Island today,” said the man with the woman. “They saw sharks in the water yesterday.”

“The sharks won't hurt me,” said Jim with a big smile on his face.

Another man getting out of a boat said, “I'm sure we just saw a shark in the water a few minutes ago.”

“Don't worry about me,” said Jim. “I don't worry about sharks.”

Jim and his two friends, Bill and Bruce pushed the boat into the water. Jim was driving the boat. He drove very fast and sprayed water on everyone standing near the boat.

Jim drove the boat to the middle of the sea near Monkey Island. Everyone could see him and the boat. He wanted to show everyone how well he could water ski.

“You drive the boat, Bill,” Jim said. “Bruce, you watch me and the rope while I water ski.”

“What about the sharks?” asked Bill.

“Forget about the sharks,” said Jim. “I'm not afraid of sharks.”

Jim got into the water. He was putting his feet in the water skis. Then Jim felt something large and hard touch his leg as it swam past him. Suddenly, a brown fin(鳍) moved through the water towards Jim.

Later, when Bill and Bruce stopped laughing, they said, “We never saw anyone move so fast! You were running on top of the water to get back in the boat! You even left the water skis in the water.

“There it is again! Shark! Shark!” cried Jim.

Everyone laughed—even the people standing on shore.

The dolphin(海豚) came to surface again, took a deep breath, smiled at Jim and went back down into the deep water.

The Angel of the North

The Angel of the North is a modern sculpture (雕塑) in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England, designed by Antony Gormley. Completed in 1998, it is a steel sculpture of an angel, 20 metres tall, with wings measuring 54 metres across. The angel, like much of Gormley's other work, is based on the shape of his own body.

According to the artist himself, the Angel of the North symbolises (象征着) the change from the industrial to the information age and stands proudly as a beacon (灯塔) of hope for the future of the region.

It cost £800, 000 to make, with the money coming from the British government. It took four years to make the sculpture. It was made in three parts, the body, which weighed 100 tons, and two wings, which weighed 50 tons each. Angels are usually thought of being white, as they represent light, but Gormley's Angel of the North is a reddish brown colour. This is because the steel has a special paint to protect it from strong wind.

The parts of the angel were moved from Hartlepool to Gateshead at night in big trucks. It took 5 hours to move everything, even though the journey is very short. The Angel of the North was put on the hill in Birtley on the 15th of February, 1998.

The sculpture was made in memory of the coal miners who worked hard in the dark earth below the hill to bring wealth to the North East in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is a sign for Gateshead.

The sculpture has since become one of the most famous landmarks in England as can be seen in television and film. It is the largest sculpture in Britain. Over 150,000 people come to Gateshead to see the sculpture every year.
