The Oxford English Dictionary (OED, 牛津英语词典) is thinking of adding the Chinese word tuhao (土豪) to its 2014 edition (版本).
The word has become popular in China during the past few months to describe newly rich people who spend money in extravagant（铺张的，浪费的）ways. Tuhao has caught on in Western countries, too, to describe similar people in their countries.
The adoption (采用) of the word by foreign countries is an example of China's spreading influence in the world not just economically, but also socially and culturally. People are paying attention to what is happening in China and are picking up some Chinese words in the process, especially those words that express unique (独特的) Chinese ideas that cannot be easily translated (翻译) into English.
The OED is also thinking of adding hukou (户口) and dama (大妈) to the already 120 Chinese words in its dictionary. Hukou refers to (指的是) China's system of residency permits (户籍系统) and dama refers to middle-aged Chinese women whose gold buying habits influence the global gold markets. The news that the OED was adding these words has met with some criticism (批评). Some people say the words embarrass (使人尴尬) China, but others insist that in a globalized (全球化的) society it's natural for words to spread and be adopted elsewhere. In fact, a word like tuhao expresses the humor of China. It's easy to pronounce (发音) and very accurate (精准的) at poking fun at (嘲弄) rich people who have more money than taste.

When you are feeling unhappy or forget how great you are, these are six ways to make you feel good about yourself.

Reading is a good habit, but the problem is, there's too much to read these days, and too little time to read every word of it. There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time. Here are two skills that I think are especially good.
Preview--if it's long and hard. Previewing is especially useful for getting a general idea of heavy reading like long magazine articles and business reports.
Here's how to preview.
●Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.
●Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.
Previewing doesn't give you all the details. It keeps you from spending time on things you don't really want--or need--to read.
Skim--if it's short and simple. Skimming is a good way to get a general idea of light reading --like popular magazines or the sports and entertainment of your daily paper.
Here's how to skim.
●Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep them across each line.
●Pick up only a few key words in each line.
Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same piece, but we'll get a similar idea of what it's all about.

A crow(乌鸦) is about twenty inches(英寸) long and black all over. Crows are dirty birds because they live on bad food. Crows eat a lot of waste food. In this way they are more useful to us than any birds. They clean up the dirty things in our streets. Crows are always hungry. They look for food all day, and in the evening you can see them in large numbers flying back to their nests(巢) in the trees. They sleep there at night.
Crows are much noisier than other birds. Very often a large number of crows will get together on one house and talk. Sometimes they talk together, and sometimes they do it by turns(轮流) like human beings(人类). It is easy to tell(判断) from crow's sound if they are pleased or angry. Perhaps crows talk a lot because they are friendly birds. A pair of crows will live together all their lives, and if one of them dies, the other one becomes very sad and quiet for the rest of its life and some time later it dies too.

Do you love a tomato fight? Come to Spain(西班牙) and enjoy its famous tomato festival, La Tomatina(西红柿大战).The Spanish love to eat tomatoes. Tomato sauce is served on the side with fried eggs, chicken, meat and omeletsat most Spanish dinner tables.

There was a parade(游行) and festival in Bunol on the last Wednesday of August of 1945 when a fight broke out between some young men. With the help of a nearby fruit and vegetable store, they threw tomatoes at each other. The following year the young people brought tomatoes with them to the parade and started a tomato fight again. Each year the fight went on until the early 1950s. In fact, since 1980 the city government has served the tomatoes!

Today La Tomatina is celebrated on the last Wednesday in August in the small town of Bunol in the east of Spain. The festival starts at 11:00 a.m. with the sound of rocket being fired and ends one hour later. Last year 40,000 people took part in throwing over 100 tons of tomatoes in the streets and this year even more are expected.

During tomato fight, you must not bring bottles or other type of things that could make an accident. You must not tear(撕扯) or throw T-shirts. The tomatoes must be broken before throwing them, to stop from hurting people. You must be careful of any traffic. When you hear the second sound, you must stop throwing tomatoes.

When the fight is over, everyone then sets off to the river to clean up. Sounds like fun.
