Except for a few times, Americans are not big present-givers. There's no exchange of presents among business people, and if one American tries to give another a present, it may look like that he wants to bribe (贿赂) him. Americans have learned that in some other countries people like to give presents to others, but among ourselves we don't see the need for presents.
Even friends may never exchange presents. When I go to foreign countries, I try to bring back little things for close friends, but nobody would feel unhappy if I didn't. I don't often remember a friend' s birthday, and few people outside of my family remember mine. If someone gave me presents too often, I'd get unpleasant. But a present from a foreigner — that kind from his or her homeland — won't go wrong, except to government employees (政府职员) who can't be given presents.
You usually open a present at once and in front of the person who gives it except Christmas and birthday presents. You should only say, ‘It's so nice. Thanks…'when you get Christmas or birthday presents.
You may want to bring a bottle of wine (葡萄酒) or flowers to a dinner party, but you're never asked to. Nobody will mind if you bring wine, but your friend may not use it that evening.
At Christmas we often give presents to our family and sometimes our friends. We also give presents to people who have been helpful during the year like doormen, babysitters, housecleaners , newspaper senders — anyone who has often helped us.

A、To pay them B、To help them C、To thank them. D、To make them work harder.
(4)、Which of the following do you think is right?

A、American business people don't want presents because they are rich enough B、The writer of this passage must be an American C、Everyone must give presents to one's family and friends at Christmas. D、Government employees can get little presents from a foreigner.
(5)、What is the main idea of the passage?

A、Present-giving in the United States. B、Customs (习俗) in the United States. C、American people and present-giving D、When and how to give presents.
举一反三
Today almost everyone knows computers and the Internet. If I ask you “What is the most important thing in your life?” maybe you will say “Computers and the Internet”.
The first computer was made in 1946. It was very big but it worked slowly.. Today, computers are getting smaller and smaller, but they work faster and faster. What can computers do? A writer has said, “People can't live without computers today.”
The Internet came a little later than computers. It is about 25 years later than computers. But now it can be found almost everywhere. We can use it to read books, send e-mails, do some shopping, play games or make friends.
Young men, especially the middle school students like the Internet very much. They often go into the Internet bars as soon as they are free. They make friends on the Internet and maybe they have never seen these friends. They don't know their names, ages and sex. They are so interested in making the “unreal friends” that they can't put their heart into study. Some of them play the games in the Internet bars all day and all night. Many of them can't catch up with others in many subjects because of that. Now the government has done many things. Some gangster Internet bars(黑网吧)have been banned. But that's not enough. The teachers and parents are still worrying about their students and children.
We can use computers and the Internet to learn more about the world. But at the same time, we should remember that computers and the Internet could not do all the things.

During Beijing's two sessions(两会),many proposals and suggestions were referred to. Here are three problems that might interest you.

Smartphone ban(禁止)

According to the survey made last year, 68.1 percent of Chinese school students have their own smartphones.

Lei Yanqin, a deputy of NPC, suggested that smartphones should be banned at schools nationwide. She said that listening to music and playing games in class not only disturb teachers, but also make it difficult for students to listen carefully. She added that students might also show off (炫耀) their phones too much.

New uniform designs

Most junior high schools in China require students to wear a uniform. However, only three in ten students are satisfied with their uniforms, as they think they are old-fashioned and of poor quality, China Education Daily reported.

The Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang Central Committee suggested that the uniforms could be redesigned. The committee said the new design could include more elements(元素) of traditional Chinese culture. They added that better quality clothing should be used to make the uniforms so that they will be more comfortable to wear.

Video game rating system

Over 200 million teenagers across China play online games like King of Glory, Guangming Daily reported. With their computers and ipads, teenagers are able to play most online games produced in China and abroad. However, some violent games might not be suitable for young people.

Many NPC deputies suggested that a rating system(分级制度) for online games should be introduced. All games would be sorted into age groups according to their content. Players would have to provide their ID numbers before playing certain games.
