What things are acceptable(可接受的) when you are at the dinner table and what things are serious breaches(违犯) of manners?

I will tell you some of the most important American rules of table manners. When you sit down to eat, you should place the napkin across your lap. You should never talk with your mouth full and should chew with your mouth closed. If someone asks you a question while you are chewing, you should finish chewing and then swallow(吞咽) the food before answering. You should never drop scraps on the table; instead place them on a spare plate. Salt and pepper(胡椒粉) will be at the table, but you should taste your food before adding any. Only put food on someone else's plate if they ask for it and if they say they do not want anything else to eat or drink then you will not give them anything else. Do not use your knife or fork to point at others because it is considered rude.

In China I know it is rude to point with your chopsticks. It is common practice to place food into a friends bowl and to put drink in their glass even after they have said they do not want any more. It is fine to drop the scraps onto the table. Though salt and pepper are not always on the table, vinegar(醋) and soy sauce(酱油) usually are. Talking while you're eating is not considered impolite.

Manners are different all over the world and can even change in different parts of a country. Have you ever seen a foreigner do something you thought was impolite? Is there something you have done that they might view as impolite?

When my daughter was in primary school, she brought home four small twigs(细枝) from school to plant. None of them looked very strong and lively. But with hope for the future, I planted them somewhere in our backyard which could give them enough sunlight. Over the years, because of the poor soil(土壤), three of them died. Only one lived at last.

It grew crooked(不直的) and very slowly. In fact, it looked more like a fat bush than a tree. Later, I noticed that it was starting to die. The branches(树枝) were becoming bare. Only the top third of the tree was still green. I did my best to save it by feeding it a lot of fertilizer, but it didn't work.

Later one morning, I went out and looked at it again. I was thinking if it would be better to just cut it down. It would make the yard look cleaner. As I walked over to take a closer look at it, however, I noticed something moving within the leaves. It was a bird patiently building a nest in the topmost branches. I smiled when I looked at it. I thought maybe this old tree was still useful. It might not be healthy or pretty, but it was still giving a bird a home.

This tree let me know that all of our lives have a purpose. It doesn't matter if we are young and strong or old and sickly. Until our last breath, we have things to do, love to give, and joy to share. We can help to make this world a better and more beautiful place.

 根据短文内容)从每小题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项选出最佳选项。

New Uses for Old Clothing

Nowadays, we're more wasteful than ever—buying, using and throwing things away without thinking about the costs. We need to start living more responsibly—but how? One answer is to upcycle(升级利用).

What do you think of the "new" hat I made for my sister? It used to be my mom's sweater.

If you're like me, you might already make soil for gardening from food waste and use empty paper boxes as storage space. Did you know you can apply the same way to old clothing? You just need imagination!

I started upcycling clothing. Making new things out of old clothes is the best way to mix my talent and my interest.

Do you upcycle? If so, what new things have you made? If not, why not give it a try?

Why don't you give your old clothes to people in need? I even give away the most expensive things I don't wear anymore. So I can help the environment while giving something useful to people in need.

Good point! I'm talking about only the oldest clothing in your room—the clothes that are too old to be worn by others. The same idea goes for food waste at restaurants and supermarkets. Before upcycling food that can still be eaten, for example, using it to make soil, we should give it to those in need.

I've made shopping bags out of T-shirts and dog toys out of socks. Upcycling clothing is a fun hobby, but the most important thing is that it makes me feel like I'm living less wastefully.

 请阅读下面短文,根据信息,回答 5 个问题。要求所写答案语法正确,语义完整切题。

I'm Tony. From a young age, I began to love skiing.I have skied since I was eight or nine years old. But once in the USA I was close to death.

It was April 1st, 2011. I skied in the Tetons with my friends Jeremy and Xavier. While I was skiing, they were watching me in a safe area, Then I turned  around and saw the whole mountain start to move behind me. It was a massive avalanche. Thousands of tons of snow was coming down the mountain behind me. I felt that the snow pushed me forward hundreds of meters,and then covered me.

It was so heavy that I couldn't move. And then it pushed me forward again.

I looked down into the bottom of the valley(山谷).  "OK, I'm going all the way to the bottom! " I thought. Then the snow pushed me again down the mountains. I thought the snow would destroy me. But in the end, I felt the avalanche slow down and I just jumped out of the snow at the bottom of the valley.

It took Jeremy and Xavier about 20 minutes to find me. They couldn't believe it when they saw me. I was so lucky.

Has the experience changed me? Do I think about life differently? I don't know, but I do know that it's important to live your life seriously. Life is a gift, so use it wisely.
