Use it up

You do not always need to have new things. Suppose there are holes in your socks. Mend them and wear them longer. You don't have to have the latest telephone until the old one doesn't work anymore. Then you get a new one. Think twice before replacing something that still works.

When something you want is not on hand look for something else that you already have to take its place. Suppose you are preparing your lunch for tomorrow and want a better sandwich. However, there is not any butter in your home. Have a cheese sandwich instead so that you can use all of the cheese. With a little thought, you can make something do, instead of buy something new.

Do without

Think about all those things that you would like to have. Do you really need them? How long will you really play with that new toy? Make a list of things that you want. Delete the things that you don't really need, so you can save a lot of resources(资源).

      In classes, your teachers will talk about the topics that you are studying.  The information they provide will be important for you to know when you take tests. So you must be able to take good written notes from what your teachers say.

    Here are three stages (阶段) of taking notes and what you should do during each stage.

    Before class

    Review your notes you have taken before you come to class. This will be good for remembering what was covered. Get you ready to understand new information your teacher will provide.

    During class

    Keep your attention on what your teacher is saying and "the signal words" that tell you what your teacher is going to say and it is important to write in your notes.  Examples of signal words are "The most important point.” and "Remember that . . . ” Be sure to include in your notes information that your teacher repeats or writes on the blackboard. Write quickly so that you can include all the important information in your notes. Do this by writing abbreviations such as med for medicine, using symbols such as % for percent, and writing short sentences.

     After class

     Rewrite your notes to make them more complete and accurate (准确的) by changing abbreviations into whole words, symbols into words, and shortened sentences into longer sentences. Use them to answer your questions. If necessary, ask your teacher for help.

    The train made a lot of noise as it came to a stop at the station. Martha waited for a while until her father held her hand. They walked onto the train together. Her mother and brother walked behind them.

    This was the first train ride for Martha and her brother Brian. They would take the train to visit their grandparents. They usually went there by car. But today, Mum and Dad wanted to try a different way.

    They walked to the middle of the train. They found some seats and sat down. A few minutes later, the train began to move.

    Martha and Brian felt a little nervous, but their parents said they would enjoy the ride. Dad said he liked the train ride because he didn't need to drive all the time. Mum added that she could talk to her two children face to face instead of turning around.

    When the children their parent's words, they felt relaxed.

    "The train isn't as noisy as I thought would be" said Martha,“ and I can stand up and walk around. I believe I can see everything through the windows.”“The train really goes fast," said Brian," I like that best of all. If we get on the train in the morning, we can see grandparents before lunch. I can't wait to enjoy their apple pie!"
