It was the end-of-year party. I had asked my mother to make us cookies. Mom's chocolate chips were the best.
But two o'clock passed, and there was no sign of her. Most of the other mothers had come and gone, dropping off their cakes and chips. The party went on, but I wouldn't leave the window. The three o'clock bell soon took me away from my thoughts(思绪). I took my bag and walked out for home.
The house was empty when I arrived. My heart was filled with anger(气愤). For the first time in my life, my mother had let me down. I was lying on my bed when I heard her coming. “Robbie,” she called out. “Where are you?” She was looking for me from room to room, but I kept silent.
When she came into my room, I didn't move, “I'm so sorry,” she said. “I got busy and forgot.” She began to laugh. I couldn't believe it. I turned over and found that she wasn't laughing but crying. “I'm so sorry. I let my boy down.” she cried like a little girl. I had never seen my mother cry.
“It's OK, Mom,” I said, “We didn't need those cookies. There was plenty of food to eat. Don't cry. It's all right.” We held each other in a long hug(拥抱).

Willie and his little dog Bounce were best friends. Willie taught his dog many interesting tricks, and often said that Bounce could do almost anything in the world but talk.

One day, Willie walked with Bounce down to the river, which was very close to his father Mr. Brown's store.

Willie began to throw stones into the water and watch ripples (涟漪). Bounce lay on the grass, enjoying the warm sunshine.

There were some logs (原木) floating in the river near the bank. Willie jumped upon one of them to see if he could throw a stone across the river. Just as he was about to throw, the log turned and he fell into the water. He was so scared, for he did not know how to swim, and there was no one nearby.

Not being a big water dog, poor Bounce ran up and down the bank two or three times, barking (叫), looking first at Willie and then around. Then he ran to Mr. Brown's store as fast as he could.

When he got there, he caught hold of Mr. Brown's clothes, then ran to the door, then back again, catching at him, barking and jumping. Mr. Brown realized something was wrong. He went with the dog.

Soon the father came to the river, and saw Willie struggling (挣扎) in the water. Luckily, his father saved him. When he got over his fear, no one seemed to be more delighted than Bounce, his true friend.

Americans love to drive. They have drive- in movie theaters and drive- through restaurants. And they also drive for vacations. They often call it the "Great American Road Trip": the whole family gets into a car or recreational vehicle(RV,旅行房车), and goes on a summertime trip across the country.

American cars are always big, but RVs are the biggest. These are houses on wheels. RVs have kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. All across the country you can find RV parks. They are places to park your RV and spend the night. And, if you can't find a good park, you can always make your home in a grocery store parking lot(杂货铺停车场).

When your little brother kicks you in the face all night in your small bed under the table, a big RV can seem very small. And, when the dog barks(吠) and Mom plays her country music on the radio—your family is not at its best. What's worse, RVs are always breaking down.

But RV travel can be a great time with the family, too. You can see the country in the comfort of your own "home". You can spend every night in a different scenic(景色的) place, or just stay where you are. You don't have to pay for hotels or restaurants, only gas. But, best of all, you are free to go wherever you want whenever you want in your home-away-from-home.
