Everybody Should Say Thank You to Ray Tomlinson

    Why should you thank Ray Tomlinson? You might have never heard of his name before, but do you know that the email you use every day was his "child"?

    Ray Tomlinson is known as "the father of email". He was born in New York in 1941. He attended college at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he took part in a program with IBM and in 1963 he received a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering.

In 1971, Ray created the first email system, which allowed people to send messages electronically from the same computer. But he thought that there might also be a way to send messages from different computers, which led to the birth of the email we know now. He chose the@ sign to separate(区别于)local from global(全球的) emails in the mailing address. "I used the '@' sign to show that the user was 'at' some other hosts (电脑主机)rather than being local," said Ray in an interview Person to person network email was born and user@ host became the standard for email addresses, as it remains today.

    Ray Tomlinson died at the age of 74. Thank Ray Tomlinson for inventing the email and making the@sign well-known. Though he may not be as famous as Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates, Ray Tomlinson surely has his place among the geniuses(天才) that gave us the convenience in our life.

    Long ago, there was a queen who lived in a palace. She felt bored and said to her advisor (顾问):

    "All the things around me are too boring. I need a different kind of beauty. Let everyone know that I will hold a competition for the most beautiful thing in the world. And the prize will be this crown(王冠)."

    Several days later, lots of people came to the competition and showed their things. The queen was not satisfied with what she saw. The advisor suggested, "What you are looking for cannot be brought to you. You must look for it by yourself. What about a journey?"

    The queen was interested in the idea, so she started immediately. As she was on top of the hill near her palace, she looked down and suddenly something cried in her heart, "Why have I never found my palace so beautiful?"

    The queen spent one year travelling. She saw beauty on the farm, in the forest and even in the stars twinkling (闪烁)at night on her journey. But what was the most beautiful thing? She thought it over. Suddenly, she under- stood beauty was everywhere. She should learn to enjoy the world. She left the pieces of her crown at different places that she had seen. As time went by, the queen's crown got smaller and smaller until nothing was left.

    She found the most beautiful thing at last. It was the world!

A man was on a flying plane. Suddenly he heard a warning from the pilot (飞行员). The pilot 1people on the plane to fasten their seatbelts (系紧安全带).

The man 2around the plane and found that many of the people became worried. Later, the pilot said, "We are so 3that we are not able to serve the meal at this time. There are currents (气流) in front of us." And then the storm came. The plane shook a lot.

The man saw that nearly 4the people on the plane were afraid except a little girl. The storm meant 5to her. She just sat on her seat and read a book. Sometimes she closed her 6to have a rest, and then she would read again. When the terrible 7came, the child was very calm.

The man couldn't believe his eyes. So as soon as the plane finally 8its destination (目的地), the man went to the girl and asked her 9she wasn't afraid at all. The sweet child answered, "That's 10my dad is the pilot and he is taking me home."

This summer my family went on a trip to Stockholm. 

Before the trip, we booked {#blank#}1{#/blank#} hotel room in the city centre. When we arrived in Stockholm, we {#blank#}2{#/blank#} （take）a bus to the hotel. Then we went out for dinner. We saw trees and flowers everywhere on the way to the restaurant. We felt like we were in a big forest. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} a lovely city! 

The next day we visited the Vasa Museum. It's home to an old ship—the Vasa. Nothing was {#blank#}4{#/blank#} （exciting）than it for my son, because visiting museums is {#blank#}5{#/blank#}（he）favourite. There were many visitors in front of the museum. We waited {#blank#}6{#/blank#} a long time and felt a little tired. But {#blank#}7{#/blank#} we went into the museum, we were all surprised. The ship looked very cool and beautiful. Then we took quite a few photos. 

The third day we went to a park in Stockholm. Lots of people were in the park. My son played with some {#blank#}8{#/blank#} （child）there. I talked with their parents. My husband watched a chess game. I thought it was the best way {#blank#}9{#/blank#}（feel）Stockholm! 

It was a really {#blank#}10{#/blank#}（relax）trip. We all had a good time. 

Being part of the basketball group in high school helped me learn the personal and social communication(交际) skills I use today. As a child, playing basketball was my favourite activity or hobby. It was also the way I met a lot of friends that I have now. All my close friends I have met are through(通过) playing basketball. Whether they were on my team, the opposing(对方的) team or just fans in the crowd who liked my play. Basketball not only helped me get friends, but also taught me a lot about life. There are many things of life like basketball. For example, basketball is a team. Like in life you have to work together with other people. The communication skills I learned from basketball help me communicate with friends, parents and bosses at work. 

I started playing basketball in the fifth grade in my primary school. At that time, I was just a 10-year-old boy and I was very quiet and shy. I hardly talked to my teammates. As the years went by, I learned how to communicate with my teammates and my coaches and began to break out of my shell to speak. I started making more and more friends. Basketball helped me meet a lot of new people. By the time I left high school, I had already had a group of friends that I met from playing basketball. 

I remember my every day of high school like it was yesterday.

 The boy in the photo is our favourite writer.1 name is Dillon Smith. This 9-year-old boy is from the US. Americans all like his first book"The Life of Dillon Smith". He uses different colors of 2 in the book.

"Hey, my writer.3 pencils do you use in your book?" Dillon's mum asks.

"Oh, let me 4 . One, two, three, ... Well, I use many pencils. I 5 different students every day and I have to use different color words(词) to write them. I use the 6 word for Tom because he likes trees and grass. My best friend Jane 7 me every day with my English so I choose(选择) the red word for her."

"How about your 8 in your class?"

"Oh! Ms Green! I choose the orange word for her!"

"Your idea is 9 I like it!" Dillon's mum is happy and she knows what to do — —10 more pencils on her son's desk.
