From a plane we can see the fields, cities, mountains or seas below. If we go into space, we see more and more of the Earth. People and man-made satellites have been sent out into space to observe the Earth carefully and people have learnt mire about the Earth in the last few years.

    The sea looks very beautiful when the Sun is shining on it. But it can be very terrible when there is a strong wind.

    The sea is very huge. It nearly covers three quarters of the Earth. The sea is also very deep in some places. There is one place where the sea is about 11 kilometers in depth. The highest mountain is the world is about 9 kilometers high. If that mountain was put into the sea at that place, there would be still 2 kilometers of water above it!

    In most parts of the sea, there are many kinds of fishes and plants. Some live near the top of the sea. Others live deep down. There are also a lot of small living things, and quantities of fishes live by eating them.

    The sea can be very cold. When people go down, the sea becomes colder and colder. Only some men could go down into the deep sea at first. But in 1970, five women scientists lived in the deep sea for fourteen days.

More and more people around the world are joining in dangerous sports. Some people climbed the highest mountains; some traveled into unknown parts of the world; some sailed small boats across the largest sea. Now some people begin to look for new excitement

Bungee jumping（蹦极） and motorcycle racing（摩托车赛） are quite dangerous sports. Bungee jumping only lasts for a few minutes or even seconds. You jump from a high place, about 200 meters above the ground, and there is a rubber band (橡胶带子) tied to your legs. When you jump down, the rubber band pulls you up. About 2,000,000 people around the world have tried bungee jumping.

Why do people join in these dangerous sports?

Some scientists say that it is because modern life has become safe and it is not interesting. In the past, people lived in danger. They had to go out and look for food, and life was like a fight but was interesting.

Many people think that there is little excitement in life. They live and work in safe places, buy food in shops, and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill.

Frodo is a 20-year-old cat who loves to sleep in the sun. However，getting to thisfavorite sleeping place by the pool means hobbling（跛行） down a lot of stairs every day. 

But life has become a lot easier for the old cat now. 

Liam Thompson is an inventor who loves cats. He noticed his old friend's difficulties and decided to do something. He spent four days building an elevator that would allow Frodo to go up and down the stairs easily. 

A video on the Internet showed how Thompson made the track and cart of the elevator for Frodo. video attracted over 900，000 people's interest. 

To make sure the elevator was safe for his old friend，Thompson used a toy to test the elevator. Thompson asked his favorite cat， "Are you ready to go downstairs without moving a muscle? I hope so because it took me four days. "

Frodo seemed very relaxed in the elevator as it went to the bottom of the stairs. Thompson laughed excitedly as Frodo walked out of the elevator and made his way over the pool.

The last Eurasian lynx (猞猁) in the British Isles lived a life of danger as it moved quickly to avoid campfires and vicious dogs, and hid in holes. Because of disappearing woodlands, being short of animals for food, and hunting, lynx started to disappear from these islands about 1, 500 years ago. But experts hope to one day bring the Eurasian lynx back to Scotland. 

Wildlife conservationists (环保主义者) in Switzerland, Germany, France, and other countries have taken Eurasian lynx from elsewhere in their areas and introduced them again to protected forests, allowing their populations to grow. Now they' re hoping to do the same thing in Scotland. Returning the cats would do more than just improve the numbers of this once- endangered animal. A win for the lynx is a win for the forest- and the planet. 

When the Eurasian lynx disappeared, so did the Scottish landscape. Without these cats and other animals hunting them, deer populations increased a lot. Those animals lived on the leaves of trees and bushes for food, and soon large areas of the Scottish forest disappeared since it couldn't grow fast enough to keep up with the deer's wish for food. Birds and rodents (啮齿动物) that depended on shelter (庇护所) in the lower level of forest plants became food for foxes, which lynx also hunt. 

Experts trying to restore the forests have to put up fences to keep deer from eating leaves of young trees. But with lynx hanging out in the woods, experts think these cats would keep the deer from harming the young trees, helping the forests make a comeback. 

And that would have even bigger influences. The Earth is losing woodlands as people cut down trees to make room for farming, and to sell the wood for products like furniture and toilet paper. In 2020 alone, the Earth lost as many trees as would cover an area larger than Michigan. 

So restoring forests in places like Scotland can help provide more space for wildlife and even fight climate change. That's because trees take in carbon dioxide, which takes in the sun's heat and warms our planet. 

When Emily Cummins was a teenager, her grandfather had an illness — a lot of pain in his hands and fingers. One day, Emily saw that he had difficulty getting toothpaste(牙膏) out of the tube(管). She made an invention that helped him with this, and won the Young Engineer for Britain Award for her toothpaste dispenser(自动取物器). 

A few years later, Emily learnt that some African countries are short of water. The women and children there often walk many kilometres a day to get water for their villages. They usually put the buckets(桶) on their heads. They have to walk carefully so as not to waste the water. Emily's invention is a simple water carrier. It makes it possible for the women to transport up to five buckets of water each time. 

Her latest project is a simple fridge that runs without electricity, but only needs the energy that comes from the sun. There are now thousands of families in villages in Zambia, Namibia and South Africa who use it. 

Emily has already won several prizes for her inventions and was named one of the world's top ten young people. And Emily often visits schools and talks to teenagers. She wants to encourage them to come up with new ideas that make the world a better place.
