“Sorry” is a word that people in Britain often say in their daily life.

      One day while I was {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(walk) on the street, a young man ran by hurriedly, brushing（轻擦）against my handbag. He continued his way, but turned  {#blank#}2{#/blank#} /bæk / and said “sorry” to me. Even in a rush, he didn't {#blank#}3{#/blank#} /fə'get / to say “sorry”. One day, after I bought some bananas, the shopkeeper was passing me the change, but I wasn't ready for it and a coin dropped onto the ground. “Sorry, Madam,” he said while bending to pick it up. I was  {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (surprise) why he said “sorry” to me. Another time, I stepped on a man's foot at the entrance to a cinema. At the same time, we  {#blank#}5{#/blank#} /bəʊθ / said “sorry”.

       Slowly, I got to know that when something unpleasant happens in daily life, the British don't care much {#blank#}6{#/blank#} who is wrong. If someone is in trouble, a “sorry” is always {#blank#}7{#/blank#} / 'nesəsəri /. Perhaps that is {#blank#}8{#/blank#} /waɪ/ I seldom see people quarrel on the buses or streets in Britain.

    Mary has {#blank#}1{#/blank#} cousins. They are Betty, Peter, Bill and Ann.

    Mary is {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (old) of five. Betty is thirteen years old. She is two years younger {#blank#}3{#/blank#}Mary and one year older than Peter. Ann is the youngest and she is naughty(淘气的). When her mother asks her {#blank#}4{#/blank#}（wash） hands, he never washes them {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (careful). She only puts her hands in the water {#blank#}6{#/blank#} a few seconds(秒) and took them out again. Betty and Peter are good at {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(run). They also like playing basketball. Peter plays {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(good) than Betty. Bill and Mary study in {#blank#}9{#/blank#} same school. They study in No.1 School. Both of them always get good {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (grade).

    Audrey Sims and Norma Frati are pen friends. Sims is from Australia, and Frati is from America. They {#blank#}3{#/blank#}to write to each other over 70 years ago, because their teachers {#blank#}4{#/blank#}them to write a letter as part of a pen friend program in school. They wrote more than 3,000 {#blank#}5{#/blank#}in the past years, {#blank#}6{#/blank#}Sims and her friend Frati had never met each other until 2013. Sims was 83 years old and Frati was 87. Last year Sims came to America to visit her old pen friend for the {#blank#}7{#/blank#}time.

    “I think we are {#blank#}8{#/blank#}to each other. We're both married and divorced(离婚)and married again, and it's almost the same,” said Sims. {#blank#}9{#/blank#}Sims and Frati love flowers and they planned to visit some gardens together in America. And the two women said that when Sims went back to {#blank#}10{#/blank#}, they would keep on writing.

    Mr Brown's horse was lost at night. All of his friends were very {#blank#}1{#/blank#} to hear that and came to see him together. After {#blank#}2{#/blank#}（听） his story, one of them said, “Why didn't you close the door of the stable(马厩) last night?” “You aren't a deaf man”, the second said. “Didn't you {#blank#}3{#/blank#}anything at that moment? The thief(小偷) must {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(赶走) the horse away out of the gate, and couldn't carry it on {#blank#}5{#/blank#} back.” “I agree with you,” said the third man. “How {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(careful) you are! Every evening before I {#blank#}7{#/blank#} to bed, I lock my stable first and put the key in my box. Why didn't you do so?”The more they said, the {#blank#}8{#/blank#}excited they became. At last Mr Brown couldn't stand any more and said {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(angry), “None of you would help me look for my horse or catch the thief. Do you think that it's all my fault(错误）?{#blank#}10{#/blank#} don't you blame(责备) the thief?”

    Two men walked through the countryside toward another village. As they come to the edge of a river, they saw an old woman sitting there upset because the bridge was{#blank#}1{#/blank#}by the storm, and she was too weak to walk across the stream. The first man said{#blank#}2{#/blank#}, “We are tall enough, and we can carry you across” The second man thought it troublesome, but he agreed reluctantly（不情愿地）. So the two men {#blank#}3{#/blank#} the bridge, lifted her between them and carried her across the river. When they got to the other side, they set her down and she went on her way gratefully. After they had walked another mile or so, the second man began to complain “My back began to hurt for lifting her.” The first man {#blank#}4{#/blank#} smiled and nodded without a word.
