Old George buys a pair of black gloves for just $7. They are soft and warm. George takes good care of his gloves, so they look new. But George loses his gloves on New Year's Day.

    In winter, he must need a pair of gloves. He is upset(心烦的)that when people find things on the road, they don't return them.

    After the holiday, poor George decides to buy another pair. Before buying it, he goes into Value Mart again to see if his gloves have been returned to the Lost and Found Office.

    "What colour are they?" the woman in the office asks again.

    "Black, "he gives the same answer. She looks into her drawer and takes out(拿出)a pair of men's gloves, "Are they yours?"

    "Yes! They are mine!" George says, with great joy in his eyes.

    When his mum fainted(昏厥) and knocked herself out, unconscious, four year old Henry Davies knew just what to do— thanks to a storybook.

    He calmly dialled 999 and told the emergency services how to get to his home and then phoned his father.

    The boy told the doctors what had happened and directed them to the house in Coundon, Coventry, and even offered the doctors a drink

    When they arrived. Henry also offered to look after his 12— month old brother Noah.

    His father, Iran, 35, said, "Chloe has been unwell with a high fever which has made her feel quite poorly. I left for work early at about 7:30 am and as she got up after I left she felt quite dizzy and faint. The next thing she remembers is fainting down on the floor and hearing Henry talking to someone. He had seen her fall and hit her head on the table, but he couldn't wake her up. So he picked up the phone and dialled 999 for an ambulance."

    Chloe said, "Henry has a storybook, Ambulance Crew, on what to do in an emergency, which we've read a few times. He even put a blanket over me. The ambulance crew were amazed. We're very proud of him."

No one knows when the first kite was made. The first record of a kite was more than 2,000 years ago in China. Han Xin, the leader of an army, wanted to bring down a king. He decided to dig a tunnel (隧道) into the king's palace. He flew a kite over the wall of the palace to make sure the length of its string (线). In this way, he could determine how long the tunnel should be. His men in the tunnel took the kite string with them. When they reached the end of the string, they knew to dig up.

  Kites have been flown in Japan for hundreds of years. In the 1700s, kites were flown in autumn to give thanks for a good harvest. They were also flown to send good wishes to couples who had their first son. Today in Japan, kites are often flown as part of a celebration, such as the beginning of a new year. And kite festivals are held each year in many parts of the country.

  Kites have been used for scientific purposes in the western world. In 1752, Benjamin Franklin tied a key to a kite and flew it in a storm to find out that lightening was a form of electricity. In the 1890s, Lawrence Hargrave invented the box kite to test ideas about flight. From 1898 until 1933, the United States Weather Bureau (气象局) used box kites to collect weather data. The Wright brothers also experimented (试验)with kites. What they learnt helped them make the first airplane flight in 1903.
