Lofton is a little village（村庄）in England. It is not f{#blank#}1{#/blank#} from the city of Manchester (曼彻斯特). Not many families l{#blank#}2{#/blank#} around the village, so the people all know each o{#blank#}3{#/blank#} . Most of them are friendly and helpful.
   Though their homes are in Lofton, many people have jobs in Manchester. S{#blank#}4{#/blank#} work in large factories there. A few work in shops or offices. Most of these people go to work by t{#blank#}5{#/blank#} . It usually t{#blank#}6{#/blank#}  about half an hour to go from Lofton to Manchester.
In the evening a lot of people like watching TV. But if they go to see a film or go to a concert (音乐会), they have to go to Manchester, because there are no c{#blank#}7{#/blank#}  in Lofton.
   Like many other villages near towns or cities, it is clean and quiet. So life in Lofton may not be so e{#blank#}8{#/blank#}  as the life in the b{#blank#}9{#/blank#} cities, but it can be just as interesting. That is why people in Lofton l{#blank#}10{#/blank#}  their village.

    What would you think if you saw a fish walking? Would you look again i{#blank#}1{#/blank#} you saw a fish climbing a tree? There is a fish that does b{#blank#}2{#/blank#} of these things. It is called the tree-climbing fish. It is believed that a traveler to India first told about the tree-climbing fish. The fish was h{#blank#}3{#/blank#}  up in a tree. What was the fish doing in that tree? How did it get there? The traveler t{#blank#}4{#/blank#}a bird might have put it there.

    The next day the traveler saw a fish come out of the w{#blank#}5{#/blank#}. It was hard to believe, but up the road went the fish. It used its fins (鱼鳍) and tail to pull i{#blank#}6{#/blank#} along. It stopped to eat some worms. After the fish ate, it walked slowly over to a tree. Up, up it c{#blank#}7{#/blank#}. When it got high up in the tree, it took a rest.

    The traveler was s{#blank#}8{#/blank#} to see these things and told other people about the tree-climbing fish. The people wanted to know w{#blank#}9{#/blank#} this fish looked like. He explained the one he saw was dark brown and about one foot long.

    People can f{#blank#}10{#/blank#} the tree-climbing fish not only in India but also in the Philippines, Thailand, Pakistan, and other places. At one time, people saw the fish in Florida, America. Because the weather there was too terrible, it was not able to live there any longer.

    I am Jackie Lee, an American Chinese. Let me tell you about my grandfather's life story.

    My grandfather was b{#blank#}1{#/blank#} in 1932 and grew up in a poor village in Fujian, China. At the age of 14, he first heard of America. It was said to be the land of gold and poor people could easily become r{#blank#}2{#/blank#} there.

    So, my grandfather came to America. “I thought it was easy to m{#blank#}3{#/blank#} money in America,” he told me, “But when I a{#blank#}4{#/blank#} in Los Angeles, I realized it was not true. I couldn't find a good job because I spoke little English. I wanted to go to a language school to learn English, b{#blank#}5{#/blank#} I couldn't pay for it. Later, I worked in a small r{#blank#}6{#/blank#}, serving the guests, cleaning up the tables, washing the dishes and sweeping the floors. I was s{#blank#}7{#/blank#} a helpful and honest worker that my boss（老板）was happy with me. I was popular with my workmates, t{#blank#}8{#/blank#}. Life became easier and in the end I entered an evening school to learn English.”

    My grandfather kept working hard, and finally made h{#blank#}9{#/blank#} dream come true. Things do not come easily in life. That is what I have learned f{#blank#}10{#/blank#} my grandfather.

Tony: You know so much about {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. Do you like them?

Mary: Yeah. I {#blank#}2{#/blank#} about them from the encyclopaedia

Tony: What is the encyclopaedia?

Mary: It is a book having a lot of {#blank#}3{#/blank#} you want to know.

Tony: It is so{#blank#}4{#/blank#}. Where did you find it?

Mary: From our school library. There are different encyclopaedias. 

Tony: Can I {#blank#}5{#/blank#} what I like?

Mary: Of course.

    In a primary school, a teacher asked her students what they wished to become when they grow up. There were several {#blank#}1{#/blank#} — a doctor, a teacher, a film-star and so on.

    One of the students gave a {#blank#}2{#/blank#} answer. This child said, "I want to be a television!" The teacher asked the child {#blank#}3{#/blank#} he had such a wish. He said, with his eyes full {#blank#}4{#/blank#} tears, "There is no one at home to watch me or care for me. Everyone sits around the television. If there is {#blank#}5{#/blank#} wrong with the TV, they give great attention to it and fix it at once."

    The loving teacher met the child's mother and {#blank#}6{#/blank#} about this with her. The mother said, "My husband is a very busy businessman. He {#blank#}7{#/blank#} has time to look after the child." "But what about you?" the teacher asked the mother. "What do you know about me? I'm the president of the women's club. I have {#blank#}8{#/blank#}many meetings and activities." The teacher now understood why the child {#blank#}9{#/blank#} lonely at home.

    "I think children want their parents to spend {#blank#}10{#/blank#} time with them." said the teacher.
