The first time you make a speech is truly a special moment, and I will surely never forget the one I gave.

As a kid, I was extremely1 and seldom said anything2 to stay quiet most of the time. When I was about to graduate from3 school I remember that my teacher pulled me aside and offered to make a4 with me. She told me how I was getting As in all of my subjects5 handwriting, in which I had only managed to receive a C. She said if I were to 6 the welcome speech at graduation, I would get an A in handwriting.

My first thought was that giving a speech doesn't sound like much7 .But who was I to complain if I could get an A so8 ? The speech I wrote was9 boring. It started with something as lifeless and10 as "Good afternoon parents, teachers, and students. Welcome to the graduation ceremony."

As you can see, my speech was nothing fancy and I am sure nobody 11 it either. But the important lesson is that I12 it and I realized the earlier you can standup and speak, the better it is. The next year in junior high school, I found it had given me more13 when I started14 the student council(学生会). Giving a speech 15 its quality was an important first step that I took and hopefully you can too.

It was a sunny Sunday afternoon. My husband was taking care of our baby girl so that my six-year-old and I could do some yard work, just the two of us. It was sure to be 1 . But soon, the clouds of mosquitos seemed 2 to our bug spray (喷雾). I was sweating, itchy (痒的), and arguing with my son about how to 3 weeds. I had told him the "right" way—getting those weeds out from the bottom, by the roots, 4 them entirely.

However, my son went about things in his own way. He pulled the 5 of the weeds off, moving quickly down the line as he left the remaining part still in the soil. Somehow, I found this to be incredibly 6 . Why couldn't he do it in my way and save me the time of having to 7 his share? Why did he do it at all if he wasn't going to do it properly?

"If you would do as told, we'd be done earlier and promised a longer period 8 we would have to return and pull weeds next time," I said, trying to keep my tone 9 .

"But people do things…10 , Mom," he said innocently.

My fire soon faded, replaced by the 11 realization that I'd just received a valuable 12 from the person that I was supposed to be teaching. While trying to 13 my baby girl, my kindergartener, and the yard work, 14 was a lifeline for me. But my way was, perhaps, not the best way after all. His time shouldn't be 15 . His job was to be a kid and take his time, for as long as he was able.

"A decade-long moratorium (中止) on fishing was imposed on the country's longest river in 2021 {#blank#}1{#/blank#} the aim of restoring its ecological health. After three years, the fish population in the river has recovered obviously, but the moratorium still faces constant threats from illegal fishing,"Tang Renjian, minister of agriculture and rural affairs, said at a news conference.

In {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (respond) to that, Tang said, "Authorities will step up nighttime surveillance (监视) as well as patrols near river sections close to provincial borders. Relying on automatic and {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (intelligence) monitoring methods, we are strengthening round-the-clock monitoring and supervision of critical water areas."

Ma Youxiang, a vice-minister of agriculture and rural affairs, told the news conference, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} it has increased by a quarter since 2021, {#blank#}5{#/blank#} total fish population in the Yangtze is only {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (slight) more than a third of the preindustrial (工业化前的) level. To restore fish populations is a long task. Tang described the ban as a long-term, complex and hard historical task closely {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (link) to the Chinese nation's sustainable development.

"{#blank#}8{#/blank#} you may see, the current state of the Yangtze can {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (regard) as being in the early stages of recovery from a serious illness after decades of overfishing and pollution," Tang said.

Ministry of Public Security data show it has solved more than 20,000 cases {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (involve) violations of the ban since 2021. Over that period, illegal fishing in the main waterways of the Yangtze has decreased by almost a third, and less than 10 percent involves more destructive organized crimes.

A visually-challenged man from Beijing recently hiked (徒步) 40 days to Xi'an, as a first step {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (journey) the Belt and Road route (路线) by foot. 

On the 1,100 kilometer journey, the man Cao Shengkang, {#blank#}2{#/blank#} lost his eyesight at the age of eight in a car accident, crossed 40 cities and counties in three province. Inspired by the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (hold) in Beijing, Cao decided to cover the route by hiking as a tribute (致敬) to the ancient Silk Road. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} friend of his, Wu Fan, volunteered to be his companion during the trip. 

Cao and Wu also collected garbage along the road, in order to promote environmental {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (protect). Cao believes this will make the hiking trip even more {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (meaning). The two of them collected more than 1,000 plastic bottles along the 40-day journey. 

In the last five years. Cao {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (walk) through 34 countries in six continents, and in 2016, he reached the top of Kilimanjaro, Africa's {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (high) mountain. 

Now, Cao has started the second part of his dream to walk along the Belt and Road route. He flew 4, 700 kilometers {#blank#}9{#/blank#} Xi'an to Kashgar on Sept. 20, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (plan) to hike back to Xi'an in five months.

Iˈve always loved the ocean. In the {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (seven) grade, I started volunteering at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California. I was upset to learn that many sea animals eat plastic garbage, {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (think)it is food. 

I decided to do something {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (educate) people about this problem. I held presentations at schools to teach kids about plastic waste. I wanted to reach businesses too. I decided that if I learned of a company{#blank#}4{#/blank#} used a lot of plastic, Iˈd send it an email urging it to cut back. 

One day, I saw a commercial for a health-care company. People in the ad were using plastic straws （吸管）. I found the contact information of the company{#blank#}5{#/blank#} emailed its president. I told him how {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (harm) plastic could be to the environment and asked him to consider using more eco-friendly options. I was so{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (excite) when he wrote back to me. He said he would make sure that the company cut its use of plastic straws in half. 

I kept going. Whenever I heard of businesses using plastic, Iˈd send an email. One of the biggest companies I wrote to {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (be) Alaska Airlines Paris. A company{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (represent) wrote back and told me the airline was switching over{#blank#}10{#/blank#}plastic to paper cups on all of its 1, 200 daily flights. 

Zach Conti, who is a student in Eastern Michigan University and joined the football team as a walk-on (临时队员) in 2020, has worked at several part-time jobs to pay for his education. Now he won't have to anymore.

"Football is something I really love, so ever since I got to school, I've had to do whatever it takes to stay here and stay in a good position with my studies and football," Conti said. "I have to do many jobs, but when you really want something, you won't feel bored."

While Conti's teammates would see him going to or coming back to work, they were very supportive. But Conti still had trouble paying for his education and his mother's medical bills. He was planning on leaving the university.

Brian Dooley, who would get a scholarship, couldn't see that happen and decided to help his teammate. He told head coach Chris Creighton about the thing. Creighton went to see if an additional scholarship could be given out. The school allowed the team to give out five scholarships and another one was not allowed. Then Dooley went to the coach with a special request.

"Brian Dooley comes into my office," Creighton said during a team meeting on August 3. "And he says, ‘Coach, Conti should get a scholarship. And I've talked this over with my family. And if there's a way to make this happen, I am willing to give up my scholarship as a gift to Conti.'" That's when Dooley walked over to Conti and handed him an envelope with the scholarship inside.

Dooley explained the reason for helping his teammate "I did it because I've seen Conti grow over the long time. It would be a great pity if he walked away from something that he loves. He works so hard. In my eyes, he should get it 100 percent."
