I'd like to tell you a story about my best friend Jane. Last week in school we had a big fight, and she didn't{#blank#}1{#/blank#} me. It all started when she asked me if she could copy my homework. I asked her why she wanted to do that, and she said that she had forgotten to do hers. I said I didn't think it was a good idea. I said it would start a bad{#blank#}2{#/blank#} and she should do her own work. She got really{#blank#}3{#/blank#} at me and said she didn't want to be my best friend anymore.     English people are famous for their humour (幽默). {#blank#}1{#/blank#} it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The main thing to {#blank#}2{#/blank#} is that English people often use understatement.

    Understatement means saying less{#blank#}3{#/blank#}you think or feel. For example, if {#blank#}4{#/blank#}gets very wet in a shower of rain, he might say, "It's a little damp (潮湿的) {#blank#}5{#/blank#}" Or, if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person {#blank#}6{#/blank#} people might say, "He isn't exactly friendly." People often use understatement in unpleasant (使人不愉快的) {#blank#}7{#/blank#} or to make another person look silly.

    Also, English people like to make fun of themselves as well as others. The comedy (喜剧) 'Mr Bean' is a(n) {#blank#}8{#/blank#}example of this kind of humour. Mr Bean always speaks as little as {#blank#}9{#/blank#} in the comedy. He always {#blank#}10{#/blank#} to use his body to make people happy. Maybe what makes Mr Bean so funny is that he does things that people in the real world will never do.

    When a wolf was walking near a village, he met a dog. It {#blank#}1{#/blank#} to be a very bony(瘦骨嶙峋的)dog. The wolf had not been hungrier than usual. So he began to move {#blank#}2{#/blank#}towards the dog, while the dog backed away.

    Some people prefer to travel by sea when possible. There are large liners and river boats. You can visit many{#blank#}1{#/blank#}countries and different parts of your country on them, Ships are not so fast as trains{#blank#}2{#/blank#}planes, but travelling by sea is a very pleasant way to spend a holiday.

Many people like to travel by car. You can make your own{#blank#}3{#/blank#}. You can travel about three hundred miles or only fifty miles a day, just as you like. You can stop wherever you wish. There is always something interesting to see, at a hotel to{#blank#}4{#/blank#}the night or at a good restaurant where you can enjoy a good meal. That is why travelling by car is popular for pleasant trips, while people usually take a train or a plane when they are travelling on business.
