    Steven is six years old. He gets some money from his mother every week. He buys a lot of things from the shops, but he doesn't really need them, and he puts them everywhere. One day his mother gives him a notebook and says, “Now, Steven, when you buy things, write their names down in the notebook, and also write down how much they are. Then you can look at it again when your money is all gone (花光了), and you don't waste (浪费) so much money next time.”

    After a week, Steven says to his mother, “Do you know, Mum, before I spend any money now, I really stop and think!” His mother is very happy and thinks, “Well, my son knows the value (价值) of money now.” But then she hears him say, “Mum, before I buy something, I always ask myself, 'Can I spell (拼写) that word and put it down in my notebook?' ”

    An eight-year-old child heard her parents talking about her little brother. All she knew was that he was very sick and they had no money. Only a very expensive operation (手术) could save him now and there was no one to lend them the money. When she heard her daddy say to her tearful mother， “Only a miracle (奇迹) can save him now，” the little girl went to her bedroom and pulled her money from its hiding place and counted it carefully. She ran to a drugstore（药店）with the money in her hand.

    “And what do you want?” asked the salesman.

    “It's for my little brother，” the girl answered. “He's really， really sick and I want to buy a miracle.”

    “Pardon?” said the salesman.

    “My brother Andrew has something bad growing inside his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him. So how much does a miracle cost?”

    “We don't sell a miracle here， child. I'm sorry，” the salesman said with a smile.  

    “Listen， if it isn't enough， I can try and get some more. Just tell me how much it costs.”

     A well-dressed man heard it and asked， “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?”

    “I don't know，” she answered with her eyes full of tears. “He's really sick and mum says he needs an operation. But my daddy can't pay for it， so I have brought all my money.”

    “How much do you have?” asked the man.

    “$ 1.11， but I can try and get some more，” she answered.

    “Well， what luck，” smiled the man. “$ 1.11， the price of a miracle for little brothers.” He took up the girl's hand and said， “Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let's see if I have the kind of miracle you need.”

    That well-dressed man was Dr Carlton Armstrong， a famous doctor. The operation was successful and it wasn't long before Andrew was home again

    How much did the miracle cost?

    Shaking the head doesn't always mean the same in different countries. Maybe some visitors would be surprised when they first come to India. When they talk to an Indian, they would find he would often shake his head. The visitors might think that the Indian doesn't like what they say. But in fact, they would be completely wrong. Indians always shake their heads when they talk to others. It doesn't mean "No". If someone wants to visit India, he should know this, or he will be in trouble.

    One day, a foreign officer went to India on business. He hired a car and asked an Indian to drive him. When he told his driver to take him to his office, the Indian shook his head at once. The officer said again and the driver shook his head again. At last the officer, of course, got angry.

    "How dare you refuse my order?" he shouted. "Drive me to my office at once!"

    The driver answered in quite a loud voice too, "Yes, sir!" But to the officer's surprise, the driver shook his head at the same time.

    The car started and the foreign officer was now too surprised to say a word. He thought about it for a while, and then he nodded with a smile, "'No' means 'Yes' here!"

    Where is Love? How can we find Love?

    Once a little boy wanted to meet Love. He knew it was a long trip to where Love lived, so he got his things ready with some pizzas and drinks and started off. When he passed three streets, he saw an old woman sitting in the park and watching some birds. She looked very hungry. The boy gave her a pizza. She took it and smiled at him. Her smile was so beautiful that he wanted to see it again, so he gave her a Coke. Once again she smiled. The boy was very happy.

    They sat there all afternoon, eating and smiling, but they said nothing. When it grew dark, the boy decided to leave. But before he had gone more than a few steps, turned around, ran back to the old woman and gave her a hug. The woman gave him the biggest smile ever.

    When the boy opened the door of his house, his mother was surprised by the joy（快乐） on his face and asked what had made him so happy. "I had lunch with Love. I has got the most beautiful smile in the world."

    At the same time, the old woman's son was also surprised at his mother's pleasure and asked why. "I ate a pizza in the park with Love, "she said," and he is much younger than I expected."

    If the world is full of love, we can enjoy a better life.

    Life may be boring in Melbourne for people who enjoy exciting nightlife. Shops here often close at 6 p.m. and there are no places to go at night. But things were different this summer, as the Victoria Night Market recently opened!

    I went to the market at 7 p.m.. The smoky smell of kebabs(烤肉串) created a nice summer atmosphere(氛围). DJs on the stage played songs and the streets were packed with people. At that time, I thought I returned to China.

    I went to a stall(摊位) with bright red and orange decorations. A sign with the words "typical(典型的) Spanish" hung at the front of the stall. The dishes in front of me were confusing(困惑的), because I had never tried Spanish food before. A woman at the stall smiled, pointed at some food and said: "You can try this seafood rice. It's a very typical Spanish dish. Unlike Chinese fried rice, the rice was as orange as the stall's decorations. I tried it. I found that it was quite delicious as soon as I put it into my mouth.

    I spent 50 Australian dollars in total, but I got to taste Greek meatballs, Thai noodles and a Brazilian burger. I'm glad that the Victoria Market offers so many great foods from every corner of the world!
