When Mr. David retired, he bought a small house in a village near the sea. He liked it and hoped to live a quiet life in it.But to his great surprise, many tourists came to see his house in summer holidays, for it was the most interesting building in the village. From morning to night there were tourists outside the house. They kept looking into the rooms through the windows and many of them even went into Mr. David's garden. This was too much for Mr. David. He decided to drive the visitors away. So he put a notice on the window. The notice said: “If you want to satisfy your curiosity(好奇心), come in and look round. Price: twenty dollars.”Mr. David was sure that the visitors would stop coming, but he was wrong. More and more visitors came and Mr. David had to spend every day showing them around his house. “I came here to retire, not to work as a guide” he said angrily. In the end, he sold the house and moved away.

17-year-old Brennan Agranoff, a colorblind boy, started his custom sock business in middle school, with a small loan(贷款)he got from his parents. Up till now, he has sold over $1 million worth of socks online in the last four years.

Brennan thought of the idea for his custom sock company at just 13 years old. He was attending a high-school basketball game in his hometown of Sherwood, Oregon, and noticed that many kids his age were wearing the same white Nike sport socks. The boy told himself that if these white plain sacks were so popular with kids, then some cool custom designs would surely be an even greater hit.

But the boy didn't tell his parents about the business idea immediately. He spent six months researching things like printing machines and technology and drawing up a business plan. Only when he had everything planned out did he ask his parents for a loan. "They thought the idea was a little out there," Brennan recently told CNN Money, but he kept pushing, and finally received a $3,000 loan to start his company. Then he began to work on his own designs. The fact that he was colorblind didn't stop him and he has created aver 200 designs now.

Business was slow the first year, but then Brennan started pushing his HoopSwagg products heavily on the Internet. Orders soon started coming in in large numbers, and HoopSwagg became a popular brand among custom sock lovers. Right now, his designs can be found on HoopSwagg website, Amazon and eBay.

Four years after starting his business, Brennan has achieved great success while balancing(平衡)school, house chores and his social life. And he says he loved every minute of it.

Jo was the first to wake. She remembered her mother's promise, and, putting her hand under her pillow(枕头), drew out a little red-covered book. She loved it. She woke Meg up and asked her to see what was under her pillow. A green-covered book appeared. Then Beth and Amy woke, to find their little books also.

"Girls, " said Meg seriously, "Mother wants us to read and love these books, and we must begin at once. I shall read a little every morning, for I know it will do me good. "

And then they opened the new books and read. The rooms were very quiet, and the winter sunshine shone in to touch the serious faces with a Christmas greeting.

"Where is Mother?" asked Meg, as she ran down to thank her for their gifts, half an hour later.

"Some poor men come for help, and Mrs. March went straight off to see what was needed, " replied Hannah, who was considered more as a friend than a servant.

"She will be back soon, so we must get everything ready, " said Meg, looking over the presents which were collected in a basket, ready to be given to their mother at the proper time. "Why, where is Amy's bottle of cologne(古龙香水)?" she wondered.

"She took it out a minute ago, " replied Jo.

"There's Mother. Hide the basket, quick!" cried Jo, as door opened, and steps sounded in the hall.

Amy hurried in, and looked rather ashamed(羞愧的) when she saw her sisters all waiting for her.

"Where have you been, and what are you hiding behind you?" asked Meg, surprised to see that lazy Amy had been out so early.

"You see, I felt ashamed of my present, so I ran round the corner and changed the little bottle for a big one and I gave all my money for it; and I'm truly trying not to be selfish any more. "

Another bang(砰砰作响) of the street door sent the girls to the table.

"Merry Christmas, Marmee! Thank you for our books; we love them, " they said together.

"Merry Christmas, little daughters! I'm glad you like the books. But I want to say one word before we sit down. Not far from here lies a poor woman with a little new-born baby. They were suffering hunger and cold. My girls, will you give them your breakfast as a Christmas present?"

They were all unusually hungry, having waited for nearly an hour, and for a minute no one spoke; only a minute, for Jo said, "I'm so glad you came before we began!"

In Anhui Province, an about two- metre-wide alley(小巷), or "Liu Chi Xiang" in Chinese, now attracts a lot of visitors. It has a story behind it.

During the Qing Dynasty, Zhang Ying, a minister(大臣), received a letter from his family in Anhui Province one day. From the letter, Zhang learnt that his family quarrelled with their neighbour Wu because of the two sides' house boundary(边界).

Then, Zhang wrote a poem to advise the family to be generous(大度的). What he said enlightened(启发) the family members as the wall was only a little thing. It was the close relationship with their neighbours that mattered. They decided to move their wall about one metre back for their neighbour. In return, the Wu family also moved back another metre. Thus, it made an about two-metre-wide alley between the houses.

Now, the alley has become very famous because people see it as enlightenment, telling people to obey public morals(道德) and keep harmony(和谐).
