If there is one person who has left a deep impression on me, it's my my teacher, Mrs. Pathak, who was my class teacher for three years. In my childhood, how I wished I had a mother or a sister like her. One moment she could be hard-working and strict, another moment kind and patient.

She always encouraged us to tell the truth. For example, if one had not done the homework, he need not lie. She allowed us to make mistakes, saying we couldn't be perfect all the time, but we should try.

Another thing she taught me was punctually. She set a good example with her own actions. She was always on time,he set a good example with her own actions. She was always on time,

She surprised us with her sense of humor. Her classroom teaching was always humorous. After class, she talked to us and told us jokes.

We really felt free to ask questions and Mrs Pathak would give the answers. If she did not know—there had some occasions—she would say so. We all then tried to find out the answers. Whoever came up with the answers was praised and given the prize. Now I sometimes wonder whether Mrs. Pathak just wanted to encourage us to explore and find answers by ourselves.

Many years ago, a rich man found that someone wan taking valuable things from his house. He locked all the doors and all the windows .Still the things went. It must be one of the servants! How could he catch the servant? He thought of a good plan.
Late one evening. When it was dark, he called all the servants together, "There is a thief in the house, but I know how to catch him.”He said.”In the next room there is a square box. In that box there is a chicken which is magic. Each of you must go into the room alone. It is quite dark in the room. You must feel your way to the table and press the first finger of your right hand on the top of the box. If you are not the thief, nothing will happen. If you are the thief, the chicken will make such a loud sound that everyone in the house will hear it.”Some of the servants said that they did not want to do this. They were frightened of the magic chicken. But the man said that they must do what he said. If they had done nothing wrong. They had nothing to fear.
So the servants went into the dark room one at a time, while the rest listened carefully. Soon everyone had been in the room. but the chicken made no sound.”Good “said the man.”Now I know who the thief is! The servants looked very surprised.“Show me your right hands! The chicken did not make a sound for a very good reason. There is no chicken in the box at all! But the top of the box was covered with paint. You all have paint on your fingers, except for one person. That person is the thief, and he was afraid to put his finger on the box.”He pointed to one of the servants.”Your finger is clean! You are the thief!”

I've loved my mother's desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.
Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk,” she'd said again, “it's for Elizabeth.”
I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter
They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional(易动感情的)”. But she lived “on the surface”.
As years passed I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me.
I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came.
My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace—it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn't be sure that the letter had even got to mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.
Now the present of her desk told, as she'd never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside-- a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded(折叠) and refolded many times.
Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.

We often hear stories of animals rescuing people. But now someone has managed to return the favor.

The event took place one snowy January morning Thomas Smith was walking his dog,Jack,in the park."As I was walking,I just saw Jack running onto the ice towards the ducks in the middle, and then he fell into the water and couldn't climb out,"said Smith. He realized he had no choice but to try and save his dog."someone else told me the lake was only one﹣meter deep, but it was at least twice that.I had to break my way through the 6﹣cm ice. Finally,I got Jack by the neck, and pulled him out.I don't think I have ever felt so cold by the time we got back to dry land. And when we got there, everyone was asking if Jack was okay﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣no one was particularly worried, about me!"

A neighbor,Julie Brown, saw it all happen."The dog went onto an icy lake. All of a sudden,it started to go under. There were crowds of people around, and they were all shouting and screaming. Before I knew it,the owner Smith was in the water forcing his way through the ice.I can't begin to imagine how cold it was.Everyone was very nervous, but he was as cool as a cucumber﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣he just crawled back out,put the dog on its lead, and went home."

Many regard him as a hero, but Mr.Smith is quite laid﹣back about it."Most dog owners are the same as me.They would do what I did without a second thought. But in the future,I'm going to make sure he's on lead near any ice ponds,Pets are members of our family.Would you do the same for them?
