An old man lived with his little grandson. Every day the old man got up early to read books.His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to copy him every 1  he could.

One day the grandson asked, “Grandpa, I want to read books as you do. But I don't understand it, and I always forget 2 I close the book. What good does 3 do?”

The grandfather quietly turned from putting 4 in the stove and replied, “Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water.”

The boy did as his grandpa said, but all the water leaked（漏）out before he got back home.

The grandfather laughed and said, “You'll have to walk faster next time.”

The next time the boy ran faster, but the basket was still empty before he 5 home. The boy said, “see, Grandpa, it's 6  to finish this task!”

    Jimmy was five years old and lived with his parents, the Watsons, in Smithville, in the southern United States. He loved his big black1, Big Boy. Last week, in the early hours of the morning, a strong smell suddenly woke Big Boy up2 his sleep. The dog got up and walked into the kitchen. There the smell and the heat grew stronger.     His parents ran out of their room. They understood that there was a fire. They 9picked Jimmy up and ran out of the house. Big Boy ran after them. Just then, the fire came all the way up to the top of the 10. Big Boy saved the family! He's a hero today in Smithville.

    A very rich man Peter lost his sight(视力). The 1 told him that only by doing a cornea(角膜) transplant operation could he bring his sight back. Peter 2 a lot of money for the cornea, but time passed day after day, 3 came for that. It was all because he was too proud of his money, and had done many dishonest things.

    One day, he took a walk in the park. He raised his head to 4 the long-awaited sunshine. However, he saw nothing but darkness.

    Peter smiled. He thought he could feel the sun again. He asked, "Is the park beautiful?"

    "Yes, very! The grass is green and the flowers are pretty. The little 11 are so lovely when the birds sing in them."

    Suddenly, he cried, "God! How I envy this boy! It's 13! Why not give me good sight?"

    "You are wrong!" a woman said to Peter. "My son is 14 just like you. He could only tell you so much because that's all I told him!" Tears suddenly 15 Peter's eyes.

    Since then, the city charity(慈善机构) has got a lot of money every year. It is from a man named Peter.
