The big red American car was much too wide for an English country road. When Jack saw it running towards him, he stopped his own car at the side of the road to make room for it to pass. The American car went slowly past, so close that he could see the driver's face clearly.

“Where have I seen that face before?” he though. “Wait a minute! I remember now. It was in the newspaper!” He took all the newspapers from his bag and turned quickly to the middle page. There was a picture of the face in it. Yes, it had a large mouth and small eyes, and his eyes were behind dark glasses.

“Wanted by the police,” read by Jack. “The city Bank will give a lot of money to anyone who helps the police to catch this man.”

“Call the police at once,” he said to himself. But a few minutes later, he was sad. “This man was caught this morning,” answered the police.

Once there was a baby eagle living in a nest (巢) on a cliff (山崖). The baby eagle loved his nest. It was warm, soft and comfortable. And even better, he had all the food and love that his mother could give. Whenever the baby eagle was hungry, his mother would always come just in time with the delicious food he liked.
He was growing happily day after day. But suddenly his world changed. His mother stopped coming to the nest, he was full of sadness and fear. He thought he would die soon. He cried, but nobody heard him.
Two days later mother appeared with some nice food. The baby eagle was wild with joy. But his mother put the food at the top of the mountain and then looked down at her baby. The baby eagle cried out, “Mum, why did you do this to me? I'm hungry. Don't you know I will die if 1 have nothing to eat?”
“Here is the last meal I give you. Come and get it by yourself.” his mother said. Then she flew down and pushed the baby eagle out of the nest.
The baby eagle fell down, faster and faster. He looked up at his mum, “ Why do you abandon me?” He looked down at the earth. The ground was much closer. Then something strange happened. The air caught behind his arms and he began to fly! He wasn't moving to the ground any more. Instead, his eyes were pointed up at the sun.
“You are flying! You can make it!” His mother smiled.

    Mr. Brown was going away for a week. Before he left, he said to his son, "If anyone asks for me, you can tell him that your father has been out for doing something, and will be back in a week, then be sure to ask him to sit down for a cup of tea."
    "OK, Dad," said his son. But he was afraid his son couldn't remember this, he wrote these words down on a piece of paper and gave it to him. His son put it into his small pocket, took it out and looked at it every now and then.
Four days passed, but no one came to see his father. The boy thought that there was no man to come and that the piece of paper was of no more use for him, so he burnt it that evening.
    The next afternoon, someone knocked at the door. The boy opened it. A man was standing at the door and said, "Where is your father?" The boy put his hand into his pocket at once and looked for the piece of paper. He could not find it. He suddenly remembered he had burnt it, so he shouted, "No more."
    The man was very surprised. He asked, "No more? I met your father last week. When did it happen?"
"Burnt yesterday evening."

There is a little story about an insurance(保险) salesman in Tokyo. Even though this man tried very hard to promote the insurance, nobody bought it. One day, he came to a small temple and began to brag about his insurance. After listening to his introduction, the monk said: “Your recommendation of insurance can't arouse any of my interests! When you are communicating with others, you must have the charm to attract others, or you will be unpromising in the future. Young man, try to change yourself!”
The salesman thought deeply about each word. From then on, he invited all his friends to point out his weakness and kept on improving himself bit by bit for all his life. Thirty years later, he became a millionaire. And this man is the famous Yuan Yi Ping. His experience reflects one attitude: sometimes, we should change ourselves instead of changing the world.

阅读理解

A taxi hit a truck. A policeman spoke to the taxi driver and to the truck driver. He also spoke to Tom. Tom was a witness(目击者). This is what they said.

TRUCK DRIVER: I was driving from the airport to Newton. A car crossed the road, so I slowed down. I did not stop. A taxi: hit the back of my truck. Nobody was seriously hurt but both the truck and the taxi were damaged(损害).

TAXI DRIVER: I was driving behind a truck a few kilometers from Newton. The truck stopped suddenly. The driver did not give me a warning(警告). I was driving very slowly. I could not pass the truck because there were two cars coming near from Newton. My taxi hit the truck, and some glass cut my left hand.

TOM: I was watching the traffic about a kilometer from the airport. A truck was going to Newton. It was going fast. When the truck slowed down, the taxi hit it. The taxi driver was not looking at the truck. He was looking out of the window at something. My friend saw the accident, too.

Animal rights officers make sure that people treat animals properly. They visit homes, places where animals are bought and sold, such as zoos, and animal hospitals. Sometimes an animal rights officer will appear in court to protect the rights of an animal.

ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER:

For example, it's not always easy to get a cat down from a tree. Other times, animal control officers must take a s{#blank#}4{#/blank#} animal to the hospital for treatment(治疗). These animals are often in great pain, and are afraid and difficult to control.

An animal doctor is called a 'veterinarian' or 'vet'. Some animal doctors work for zoos or animal hospitals. Vets do most of the s{#blank#}6{#/blank#} things as doctors do. They take the animal's temperature, give injections(注射), and take X—rays. They also decide what kind of medicine a sick animal may need. If an animal w{#blank#}7{#/blank#} too little, the doctor may use a feeding tube(管) to make sure it gets enough nutrition. It takes six to seven years of higher education to become a doctor of veterinary medicine.
