Recently, Donald Trump has been chosen to be the Person of the Year by Time. But who is the Person of the Year in your heart?

    Katrina, 13, England

In my eyes, the Person of the Year must be British actor Alan Rickman. I love him because of his beautiful voice in the movie Alice in Wonderland. The most successful character he has made is Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies, who loves Lily till the last second of his life. In 2016, he died at the age of 69. The author of Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling said he was a perfect actor and a wonderful man.

    Henry, 13, Portugal

The Person of the Year must be Antonio Manuel de Oliveira Guterres. He was the former premier of Portugal (葡萄牙总理). And now he is the new Secretary-General (秘书长) of the United Nations. Before him, eight persons have taken this job. In my opinion, the UN Secretary General always plays an important role in developing international relationships. I think that he is worth offering the job and will make something great to the world.

    Zhang Xiaoning, 15, China

I think Guo Chuan, the famous Chinese sailor, can be Person of the Year. Guo broke many world records with his sailing boat. He often sailed around the world alone. He had strong spirit. Whatever difficulties he met, he never gave up. He went missing at sea earlier this year. But he still lives on in my heart.

    Michael, 12, France

The person I want to choose would be Teresa May, the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Since the UK left the European Union, many people thought that the UK would be in a mess. However, May made an effort to "save the UK". She has done a good job. It is said that she has dealt with the chaos (混乱) of the English political parties (政党). She has also solved a lot of problems and showed her abilities to the world. She has been praised as the second Margaret Thatcher (撒切尔) for her hard work.

(1)、Who is Alan Rickman?
A、The former premier of Portugal. B、A wonderful British actor. C、A famous Chinese sailor. D、Prime Minister of the UK.
(2)、Why does Zhang Xiaoning regard Guo Chuan as the Person of the Year?
A、Because he went missing at sea earlier this year. B、Because he had a strong body and he could sail a long way. C、Because he broke many world records in sailing and he had strong spirit. D、Because he played an important role in developing international relationships.
(3)、According to the passage, which of the following is RIGHT?
A、Guo Chuan often sailed around the world with his friends. B、J. K. Rowling is the author of Harry Potter and a perfect British actor. C、Antonio Manuel is the eighth person of the Secretary-General of the UN. D、Teresa May succeeds in dealing with problems of the English political parties.
(4)、Which one might be the best title of this passage?
A、Famous Leaders in the World. B、The People of the Year in Teens' Heart. C、The Second Margaret Thatcher. D、Trump Becomes the Person of the Year.

A 108-year-old Message in a Bottle

On November 30, 1906, George Bidder dropped a bottle from a boat into the North Sea. The weighted glass bottle sank almost to the sea floor, and then it move slowly for 108 years and 138 days.

Its journey ended when Marianne Winkler found the bottle in 2015. Winkler was then on vacation on Amrum Island. She picked up the bottle when it was washed up onto the beach. She saw a piece of paper inside, but didn't break it open. She could tell that the bottle was old. So she didn't want to damage it.

Finally she got the piece of paper out of the bottle. She found that the paper was actually a postcard. On the back of the card there was this message: The Marine Biological Association(海洋生物学协会) would pay a shilling(先令) for the bottle. A shilling was a unit of money that was used in Great Britain before the early 1970s.

Winkler filled out the card and posted it. The association was surprised to get a postcard addressed to George Bidder, the president of the association from 1939 to 1945. The workers of the association searched on the Internet to find a shilling. They found one and sent it to Winkler as a reward.

The message in the bottle was the oldest ever re-discovered. For this reason Marianne Winkler got a place in  “Guinness World Records”(吉尼斯世界纪录). She broke the record for the oldest message in a bottle.

Winkler's bottle was not the only one Bidder sent to sea. Between 1904 and 1906, he spent away more than one thousand bottles. He placed postcards inside them. The bottles were part of a research  project to map currents(洋流) in the North Sea. This was the best method at that time. But whether the association could get the bottles back depended on the people who found them. The association reported that about 55 percent of the bottles were returned. They added that the experiment was a success as it showed the east-to-west flow of the North Sea's currents.

In about 1503, during Christopher Columbus's fourth and final trip to America, his ship was seriously damaged in a storm. Columbus and his men had to live on a small island for several months while they tried to repair their ship and return to Spain.

At first, the local people on the island were very kind to the European visitors, giving them all the food and clothes they needed to survive. However, as the months passed, the local people became more and more unhappy with their guests, who were tricking and stealing from them. Finally the locals decided to stop helping. Without food or any way to leave the island, Columbus's group was soon in serious trouble.

Luckily for Columbus, he had a book about the stars and planets on his ship. It described the movements of all the objects in the night sky. The book, written by a well-known German scientist, said there would be a total lunar eclipse(月食)and how long it would last.

Columbus worked out the difference in time between Germany and North America. He then had a meeting with the local leaders just before the eclipse would take place. In this meeting, Columbus told them his god was angry because the local people were no longer giving food. So his god would take away the Moon to punish them. At the moment Columbus finished talking, just as he had planned, the Moon began disappearing.

The local leaders grew frightened and quickly agreed to provide Columbus with food and anything else he wanted. But first, Columbus's god had to return the Moon. Columbus told them he would have to discuss the idea with his god on his ship. Knowing the Moon would stay completely hidden for about 48 minutes, Columbus returned just before the Moon began to reappear. From that day on, until they finally left, Columbus and his men no longer had any trouble getting the food they needed.
