阅读理解

In the summer between my first year and second year in college, I was invited to be an instructor(辅导员)at a high school camp. On the first day, when we were dancing and playing games, I noticed a boy under the tree who was small and thin. His shyness made him appear weak. I walked towards him, introduced myself and invited him to join in the activities and meet some new people. He quietly replied, "No, I really don't want to do this." I could understand that he was in a new world but I knew it wouldn't be right to force him either. Actually, the boy didn't need a close talk but a friend.

At lunch the next day, I was leading camp songs when I saw the boy under the tree sitting alone. I tried again with the same invitation, but he refused once again. That evening I was told the boy's name was Tommy. Then I asked the campers to pay special attention to the boy and spend time with him when they could.

The days went by and the time came when we had to leave. We held a big, warm party to celebrate the closing of the camp. All the campers shared their wonderful moments. To my surprise, I found the boy from under the tree dancing joyfully with two girls. I couldn't believe it was the same person.

In October of my second year, I received a phone call from Tommy's mother. She told me that Tommy was hit by a car and died. I offered my deep sadness. The mother said, "Tommy mentioned you so many times. I want you to know that he went back to school and made new friends with confidence. You made a difference to Tommy during his last months."

At that moment, I realized how easy it was to give a bit of yourself every day. You may never know how much each gesture may mean to someone else. I hope that everyone can pay attention to his own "boy under the tree".

Online classes in space got lots of attention among Chinese students. The "classroom" in space station is about 400 kilometres away from the earth. The space classes make the young proud of our country. As a special "teacher", Wang Yaping is regarded as (看作)"the most beautiful astronaut(宇航员).

Wang Yaping was born in a small village in Shandong in 1980. She studied hard all those years. She was good at all subjects, especially sports. Luckily, in 1997, she was accepted by Changchun Flight Academy.

Wang's space dream started in 2003, when China sent its first astronaut Yang Liwei into space. She told herself, "China now has a male astronaut. When will there be a female one?" At that time, Wang was a pilot in the Chinese army. After having safe flights (飞行)for 1, 600 hours during nine years in the training centre, Wang was a strong candidate (候选人)to become an astronaut in 2010. In 2013, Wang realized her space dream. She was sent to space by Shenzhou— 10. She joined the team of Shenzhou— 13 in 2021 and flew into the space for the second time.

However, it is difficult to be an astronaut. She has to experience a lot of pain that most people can't stand and keep training all the time. Wang Yaping told Xinhua, "The space environment won't change because you are a woman. " She pushed herself hard, getting the same training as men, including the pull— ups and barbells(杠铃). That finally made her dream come true.

"You are on the way to success as long as you stick to your dreams, " Wang Yaping said. She set a good example to the young. Millions of students are encouraged and inspired(受鼓舞)by the most beautiful astronaut.

When most kids go to the beach, they're always busy playing with sand. But for Cash Daniels, the plastic straws(吸管) on the beach made him start a lifelong career(事业) in saving the planet.

Now Cash is 14 years old,and he has had a really positive influence(积极的影 响) on his hometown. Besides organizing river cleanups, he has written a children's book about river pollution. He has also raised enough money to put 17 recycling bins(回收箱) along the Tennessee River.

Cash has always loved nature. Once he learned that 80% of waste from land and rivers ends up in the ocean, he couldn't sit back and do nothing.

With the help of his family, Cash took the first step — cleaning up the river. It quickly went from a family act to a community(社区) activity with hundreds of volunteers and neighbours.

"I started The Cleanup Kids with my friend Ella," Cash said. "We want to make a difference first in the place where we live. We also want to teach kids how their actions are influencing the water and the ocean."

"The ocean is important. Everyone should take care of it. If you love the ocean and love what lives in it — you'll want to protect it," Cash continued. "We have only one Earth. Every little action matters. One person can make a positive change if he simply stands up and joins in."
