Peter is eight years old, and he goes to a school near his house. He always goes there and comes home on foot. He usually gets back on time, but last Friday he came home from school late. His mother saw him and said to him, "Why are you late today, Peter?" "My teacher was angry and told me to see the headmaster after class," Peter answered. "To see the headmaster?" his mother asked. "Why did she tell you to see him?" "Because she asked a question in class," Peter said, "And nobody could answer it except me." His mother became angry. "But why did your teacher tell you to see the headmaster then?" she asked. "Because her question was 'Who put the glue (胶水) on my chair?'" Peter said.

    Mr. and Mrs Jones seldom(很少) go out in the evening , but last Sunday Mrs Jones said to her husband , “ There is a good film at the cinema this evening . Can we go to see it ? ”

    Mr. Jones was quite happy about it . So they went there and they enjoyed the film . They came out of the cinema at 11 o'clock , going into the car and began to drive home . It was quite dark . Then Mrs Jones said , “ Bill , look , a woman is running along the road very fast and a man is running after her . Can we help her ? ''

    Mr. Jones said , “ Yes , I can .''  He drove the car slowly near the woman and said to her , “ Can we help you ? ” “ No , thank you , ” the woman said , but she didn't stop running . “ My husband and I run home after the film , and the last one will wash the dishes at home .”

    A driver stops his car in front of a shop and he wants to have a rest. Just when he closes his eyes, a man comes up and knocks at his window to ask the time. The driver opens his eyes and looks at his watch. "It's eight o' clock." He says. Then he closes his eyes again. But a second man is knocking at the window now. "Sir, do you have the time?" he asks. The driver looks at his watch again and tells the man it's half past eight.

    Just like this he can't have a good rest. So he writes some words on a piece of paper and puts it on the window for all to see. It says, "I don't know the time."

    Again the driver closes his eyes and he thinks he can have a good rest now. A few minutes later, a third man comes up and begins to knock at the window. "Hey sir, "he says, "It's a quarter to nine."

    Once there was an old farmer. He had a horse and the horse was almost as old as himself. One morning he set out(出发) with his young son to sell the horse before it died.

    The father and the son walked because the farmer did not want the horse to be too tired. They met two men on the road. They said, "Why are you walking, farmer? You have a horse. It's a long way to get to the market. "The farmer knew that this was true, so he rode on the horse while his son walked.                                          

    Then they met two old ladies. "What are you doing up there, farmer? Can't you see how tired your son is? "So the farmer got down, and let his son ride on it. Twenty minutes later, three old men stopped them. One said, "Why are you walking, farmer? Get up. It's too hot for an old man like you to walk today. "So the farmer got up behind his son and they went on riding.                                                      

    Sometime later, a young woman passed them. "Why aren't you walking?"She asked, "It isn't far to the market. Give your poor old horse a rest. " So the farmer and his son got down once again. It is a fact that you cannot please (使…高兴) all the people all the time.
