For years I went to school by bus, so I met many "familiar" strangers. We took the same bus but didn't know each other's names. I used to think it was impossible for us to be true friends. How wrong I was! Smiles from the "nameless" people have changed my thought.

The first time on the bus, I saw different faces. As days went on, we hatted like old friends.

But I felt it a pity that I was unable to set up the same friendship with a silent girl in the front of the bus. Her old clothing suggested that she didn't have much money, but she always took a cup of water for the driver. I guessed she was a kind girl. But why did she sit in silence instead of talking with us? Why did she never reply to our friendly greetings? Couldn't she smile?

Then, one evening, I got the answer. I walked to the park nearby and found the girl sitting alone under a tree, lonely and sad. I greeted her with the same warm smile that had shown to her all these months, but this time her face turned red, then a shy smile appeared. As soon as she began her first words, I understood why she hadn't spoken to us before. Talking was hard for her.

I heard her story. Her parents worked hard somewhere. She lived with her disabled grandparents. She said, "I can't express myself very well. Most of the time, I can't say what I want to say I have no friends but. You always smile at me like an angel… so I also want to smile." That evening, we exchanged our names and we said goodbye like old friends.

The smile is the key to opening the door of heart; it can break the cold walls in front of us.

举一反三
Stephen used to work in a company. Unfortunately (不幸地), he got serious heart disease(疾病). He couldn't work for a long time. Thinking he could still do something for others, he decided to be a volunteer at a Children's Hospital. Stephen loved children very much. With his love, he did his job well. Sometimes he lost his children. They died. At that time, he would tell these sad parents that he would soon be with their children in heaven (天堂) and he would take care of them. His words seemed to help those parents.
There was a girl who could not walk because of a disease. She couldn't do anything and she was very sad. What was worse, the doctors said that they could do little for her. Stephen decided to try to help her. He started visiting her, bringing paints, brushes and paper. He put the brush in his mouth and began to draw. He didn't use his hands at all. Only his head would move. He always told her that she could do anything she wanted.
At last she began to draw with her mouth. She and Stephen became friends. By and by, the little girl was getting better and better. She was allowed to leave the hospital. One day. to Stephen's great surprise, she walked to see him on her own feet! She gave him a picture she had drawn. At the top, it read: “Thank you for helping me walk. It's all because of your love.”
Love can sometimes be more powerful than doctors and medicines. Love makes our world more beautiful and colorful.
Stephen died a few days after the girl gave him the picture.

Drawing on a New Friendship

Last Saturday, I went to the park to draw. When I finished the outline of a girl, a shadow(影子)fell across my drawing.

"That's not a bad start", said the shadow. "Do you have any finished drawings?" I looked up to see a girl about my age.

I was displeased that someone was looking at my drawing and interrupted me. "Not bad?" I asked.

"No need to be angry." The girl handed a sketchbook(素描本)to me." Want to look at my drawings?"

I felt curious and traded sketchbooks with her. Her sketches of people were okay, but I was really attracted by her drawings of nature, like trees, rocks, and rivers, all done with great detail.

"Wow!You have some talent," I said. "What's your name?"

The girl took back her sketchbook and answered, "Emma Thompson."

"I'm Alice Ruiz, "I said." You draw so well. Are you in an art class?"

Emma replied, "No. The art class is full, so I have to wait until next term. Besides, you're a talented one. I really find it difficult to draw people, but you make it look easy."

"I have a great idea!"I said." Let's draw together! You can draw the nature views on one piece of paper while I draw the people on another. Then we'll exchange and finish each other's drawings. That way, both drawings would show off both of our talents!"

"That's not a bad idea, Alice, "Emma agreed.

About an hour later, we completed our drawings. I had drawn a boy walking with his dog. Emma had added a path and some flowers. Emma had drawn a beautiful tree, and I had added a girl reading under the tree.

"This was a fun idea, "I said." Hey, Emma, would you like to meet me here again to draw together?"

"See you next Saturday, Alice, "Emma said with a smile.
