Mr. Klein told the class that a new student, Inez, would join them soon. He 1 that Inez was deaf. She “talked” with others by using sign language. Mr. Klein knew sign language, and he decided to teach 2 students so that they could also “talk” with Inez.
    First, they learned to sign the letters. Some letters were hard to3 . Other letters, such as C ,were easier because the shape of the hand was the same as the shape of the letter.
    The 4 thing they learned was finer spelling. They signed one letter after another to spell a word. They5with two-letter words such as at and on . Then they spelled 6words.

When Inez first entered the classroom. She looked  10 . But the students signed, “Good morning, Inez. ” She gave the class a big smile and signed back, “What a wonderful welcome !”

    Last night I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg, a distance of about 80 miles. It was late, I was late, and I was driving 1.

    At one point along an open highway, I came to a crossroads with a traffic light. I was 2 on the road by now, but as I came near the light, it turned 3, and I braked to a stop. I looked left, right, and behind me. Nothing. Not a car, no suggestion of headlights, 4 there I sat, waiting for the light to 5, the only human being, for at least a mile in any 6.

    I started wondering why I 7 to run the light.  I was not afraid of being caught, because there was 8 no policeman anywhere around and there certainly would have been no 9 in going through it.

    Much later that 10, after I'd met with a group in Lewisburg and had climbed into bed near midnight, the question of why I'd stopped for that light 11 me.     One day, there was an earthquake in a small mountain village. Nothing was destroyed and 1 was hurt. But a big rock fell from a nearby mountain and stopped in the middle of the road.

    When the earthquake2many people came to the road and saw the rock. Some of the strongest men tried to lift the rock off the road. But they couldn't move it. They tried to push it but3.They tried to pull it with ropes but nothing worked.

    “Well,” they all agreed, “There's nothing we can do about it. We'll have to change the road.” At this time a boy of 12 years old said, “I think I can help you to move the rock.”

    “You?” they shouted, “What are you talking about?” The men all4 at the boy.

    The next morning some people came into the street.One of them shouted, “The rock 5!” More people ran out to see. It was right. The rock wasn't in the road any more. It wasn't even near the road.

    “This is6,” they said, “Where did it go?”

    The boy stood in the street,7, “I told you I could move it last night. and I buried(埋) it.”

    The boy said.

    The people looked 8.“You see,” he said, “I dug a deep hole next to the rock and I dug a small incline(斜坡) up to the rock and the rock9down into the hole by itself. I covered it with earth.”

    The people shouted,“What a10 boy!” And some of them said, “Why haven't we thought of this good way?”

    A little boy loved to play around a tall apple tree every day. Later, when he grew up, he no longer played there.

    One day, the boy came and he looked 1. When the tree knew the boy wanted some toys, she asked the boy to pick up all her 2 to sell. So the boy did it and left.

    Another day, the boy turned into a man and got back, "Come and play with 3 !" the tree was excited and said. "4, I have to build a house to live in," the man said. "You can 5 off my branches to build your house. " So the man did it and left 6.

    One hot summer day, the man came. when the apple tree knew that the man needed a boat to go sailing, she let him 7 her trunk(树干).

    After many years, the man came again. "Sorry, my boy. But the

8 thing left is my dying roots," the tree said. "I just need a place to rest 9 I'm old and tired after all these years," the man said.

    "Come! 10 tree roots are the best place to rest." The man sat down and the tree smiled with tears.

    When I was 19 years old, I worked in a doctor's office as a medical assistant. I was shy and didn't 1  myself, so I  2 talked with others.  I was uncertain about my future.

    I met a doctor there and became good friends with him. He 3 me to believe in myself and asked me to learn to communicate with others. He helped me accept 4 , and then he encouraged me to5 one or two college classes. I did as what he told me and did very well.

    One day, he asked me where I wanted to go ten years later and 61 wanted my life to be like. I hadn't thought about this before that day. That night I 7 thought about the two questions. It was he that made me 8a different world.

    Later, I went to college and realized my9was to be accepted into a physician assistant training program. Unluckily, it was very 10and I couldn't afford it, I wanted to 11. When my dream was about to slip away, this wonderful man took me out one evening into a bar, bought me a bottle of beer, and offered to help me pay for my college education. He did it 12 asking for anything in return.

    A few years later, I asked him why he helped me. He said," 13 I knew you could be more than what you were, and because once, when I wasn't sure whether I could succeed and didn't have the money for school, 14 helped me."

    After hearing his words, I was shocked. I said, "Thank you, Joe! I will 15 the love to others!"
