    John's birthday is on August 16th. His parents are going to have a party for him. He is very happy about it. He would like to invite his friends to the party. Last Sunday night, while John was in his room, his mother walked in.

    "Are you still doing your homework?" she asked.

    "No, I'm writing a letter to Uncle Tom," John answered.

    John's mother was very surprised because John never wrote letters to anyone.

    "Are you asking him to come to your birthday party?"

    "No," John answered, "Uncle Tom never comes to my birthday parties."

    "Then what are you writing about?" his mother asked. "Will you read me the letter?"

    "OK," John said, "but I haven't finished it. I have only written two lines. I'll read them to you."

    "Dear Uncle Tom, thank you very much for sending me such a nice gift. I hope..." her mother stopped him. "But Uncle Tom hasn't sent you any gifts."

    "I know," John answered. "I'm not thanking him for this year's gift. I'm thanking him for last year's. You know, it's never too late to thank him."

    Tom has tried many ways to be ill. He doesn't wear a sweater when he should, and two days ago he walked in the rain without his shoes. But nothing happened.

    Yesterday Millie told Tom about a boy in her class who liked being away from school. The boy would rub(摩擦) the end of the thermometer(温度计) until it went up to 39℃. Then he put it in his mouth and his mother would think he was really ill.

    This morning Tom was trying doing that but it never went above 35℃ and he rubbed it for ten minutes. So he held the thermometer next to the light on his desk and it went up to 40℃. He thought he'd put it in his mouth and walk downstairs like that. Then his mother would take it out and she would be worried when she saw that he was rather ill.

    The only trouble was that he didn't know the thermometer would be so hot. As soon as he put it into his mouth it burnt his tongue(舌头) ! He spit(吐) the thermometer out. It fell on the floor but it didn't break.Then ,Tom will have to think a better way to get his mother and father back together.

    Mr. Jones and Mr. Brown work in the same office (办公室). One day Mr. Jones says to Mr. Brown, "I will have a small party at our house on Monday evening. Would you and your wife like to come?"

    Mr. Brown says, "Thank you very much. I'd love to, but let me ask my wife first." So Mr. Brown goes to the other room and telephones his wife. Then he comes back and looks very worried.

    "What's the matter?" asks Mr. Jones. "Is you wife there at home?"

    "No," answers Mr. Brown." She isn't there." My small son answers the telephone. I say to him, "Is your mother there, David?" and he answers "No, she isn't in the house." "Where is she?" I ask , "She is somewhere outside(在外面). ""What's she doing? ""She is looking for me."

Several years ago, I spent most of my time at a mental hospital (精神病院) in our town. I found much joy there. At first it was a little scary to be there, but I stayed on, because I had a reason for doing this.

I volunteered in a locked-up (封闭的) environment. To my surprise, I found that a friend of my parents' was a patient in this hospital. I knew, when I was a baby, this woman wanted to keep me because she had no children. I looked after this woman and showed my old photos to her. Finally, she was able to remember some old things, and she said to me one day, "Dear, you should not come here." But I wanted to bring something happy into this woman's life. I learned that because she had no family, she couldn't leave here and go home. So I brought her to my home twice and I still remembered the happy smile on her face.

I have never forgotten this volunteering experience. This woman later passed    away. I can't see her anymore, but I'm happy that I have done something to make a difference in another person's life.

This is George, a little monkey, and always curious (好奇). {#blank#}1{#/blank#} They were taking a trip to the country. Right then the worker shouted, "All aboard!" A crowd of people hurried towards the train. George simply rushed with the crowd through the gate. There he found the perfect hiding place for a monkey. 

{#blank#}2{#/blank#} "Look, Daddy, " he said,  "a train!" His father looked up and shouted. "That's not our train!" But it was too late. The gate locked behind him. The boy began to cry. George saw the boy's to y roll towards the tracks(轨道). The boy ran after it. George climbed out of his hiding place and ran fast.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} What a close call!

When the worker opened the gate, the boy's father ran to his son. The boy was not crying now. He was playing with his new friend. "You saved my son!" said the boy's father. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Just then Mrs Needleman arrived. She said"Here comes our train. ""This is our train too. " the father said. The little boy was excited. "Can George ride with us?" he asked.  That sounded like a good idea to everyone. So the worker found them a special seat. Right up front!
