Little Peter is a boy of nine. He began to go to school when he was six, and now he is in Grade Three. He lives not far from the school, but he is often late for class. He likes watching TV in the evening and goes to bed late, so he can't get up on time in the morning.

    This term, Mrs. Black, Peter's aunt, teaches music in Peter's school. She is strict（严格的）with Peter and often tells the boy to obey the school rules and come to school on time. Yesterday morning, Peter got up late. When he hurried(赶紧) to school, it was a quarter past eight. His aunt was waiting for him at the school gate.

    "You are ten minutes late for the first class, Peter," Mrs. Black said angrily. "Why are you often late for class?" "Every time, when I get to the street corner(街道拐角), I always see a guidepost(路标). It says SCHOOL—GO SLOWLY!"

    Bill Fuller, the postman, whistled(吹口哨) cheerfully as he pushed his bike up the hill towards Mrs Dunley's house. His work for the day was almost finished. His bag, usually quite heavy when he set out on his road, was empty now except for the letter that he had to deliver(递送) to Mrs Dunley. She lived over a mile from that village so that, when Bill had a letter for her, he always finished his day's work much later. He did not mind this, however, because she never failed to ask him in for a cup of tea.

    When Bill entered the gate of Mrs Dunley's house, he was surprised not to find her working in the garden. She usually spent most afternoons there when the weather was fine. Bill went straight round to the back of the house, thinking that she might be in the kitchen. The door was locked and the curtains were drawn. He returned to the front of the house and knocked hard on the door. There was no answer. Bill thought that this was very strange because he knew that Mrs Dunley hardly left the house.

    Just then, he noticed that her bottle of milk, which was delivered early in the morning, was still on the doorstep. This worried him. If Mrs Dunley had not taken in her milk, perhaps she was ill. Bill walked round the house until he found an open window. He squeezed(挤) through it. Then he went into the hall. There he almost fell over Mrs Dunley, who was lying at the foot of the stairs unconscious(昏迷不醒的). Realizing that there was little he could do for her, Bill rushed out of the house, stopped a passing car and told the driver to telephone for an ambulance(救护车) as soon as he got to the village.

    Charlotte's Web (《夏洛特的网》) is a classic children's novel written by an American author, E.B. White. The novel tells the story of a pig named Wilbur and his friendship with a spider (蜘蛛) named Charlotte.

    Wilbur is the 11th baby of his mother. Since his mother can only feed ten babies at one time, the farmer plans to kill Wilbur. Kind-hearted little Fern saves him and scents him to a nearby farm. Animals on the farm refuse to befriend Wilbur, so Wilbur feels lonely. However, Charlotte welcomes this new member and is glad to make friends with him.

    Knowing what is going to happen to Wilbur (as the farm owner plans to kill him for sale), Charlotte promises to make a plan to save his life. She writes a lot of good things about Wilbur on her web and makes him famous. Charlotte succeeds in saving Wilbur's life, but she dies as she is too old. Luckily, she leaves three baby spiders. More and more generations of spiders continue to be with Wilbur.
