I am a writer．I spenda great deal of my time thinking about the power of language—the way it canevoke(唤起)an emotion, a visual image, a complex idea, or a simple truth．Languageis the tool of my trade．And I use them all—all the Englishes Igrew up with．

Born into a Chinese family that hadrecently arrived in California, I've been giving more thought to the kind ofEnglish my mother speaks．Like others, I have described it topeople as "broken" English．But I feel embarrassed to say that．It hasalways bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than"broken", as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked acertain wholeness．I'veheard other terms used, "limited English," for example．Butthey seem just as bad, as if everything is limited, including people'sperceptions(认识)ofthe limited English speaker．

I know this for a fact, because when Iwas growing up, my mother's "limited" English limited my perception of her．I wasashamed of her English．Ibelieved that her English reflected the quality of what she had to say．Thatis, because she expressed them imperfectly her thoughts were imperfect．And Ihad plenty of evidence to support me: the fact that people in departmentstores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not giveher good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they didnot hear her．

I started writing fiction in 1985．And forreasons I won't get into today, I began to write stories using all theEnglishes I grew up with: the English she used with me, which for lack of abetter term might be described as "broken", and what I imagine to be hertranslation of her Chinese, her internal(内在的) language, and for that I sought topreserve the essence, but neither an English nor a Chinese structure．Iwanted to catch what language ability tests can never show: her intention, herfeelings, the rhythms of her speech and the nature of her thoughts．

    On April 8, a report came out on the lives of high school students in China, Japan, South Korea and the US. It surveyed around 6200 students from the four countries last year. You will find the answers to many of your questions in this report.

    Who study hardest?

Chinese students spend the most time studying. Nearly half of Chinese students (48.65%) spend more than two hours on their homework every day. That's much more than students of the US (26.4%), Japan (8.2%) and South Korea (5.2%).

    Who sleep most often in class?

Japanese students fall asleep in class most often. About 45% of them said they sometimes sleep in class. In South Korea, it's 32%; in the US,21%; and 5% in China.

    Who are the most distracted?

    American students are the most active in class, but also the most distracted. 64.2% said they chat with friends in class; 46.9% said they eat snacks in class; and 38.9% said they send emails or read storybooks in class.

    What do they do after school?

    In their spare time, most Chinese students study or surf the Internet. Most American students go out to play with their friends. Most Japanese students do physical exercise. Most Korean students watch TV.

    My grandma whom we all called Nanny was a solid, first-generation, Italian immigrant. She came to this country with her family on a tiny ship during World War I when she was only 8 years old. During the trip she survived stormy seas, little food, and an attack by a German U-boat. After getting here, her large family worked hard to build a new life in America. They never had much money but were rich in love.

    One day, when I was about 5 or 6 years old, my parents and brothers went on a trip. It was just me and Nanny in the house for the weekend. Nanny seemed so happy to be taking care of me all by herself. She made me a special breakfast that first morning. However, all I could do was to complain about how the food was not how Mom always made it. Nanny quietly put down the plate and went into the living room. I followed a minute later and saw that she had tears in her eyes. It was the first time I had ever seen my strong and proud grandmother cry and I was the one who had caused it.

    I walked over to Nanny, climbed on her lap, and for the first time in my short life I did something else too. I apologized without being told to and asked Nanny to forgive me. She smiled, rubbed my head, and told me I was a good boy even though I didn't feel like one then.

    That memory just like my Nanny's love will stay in my heart forever. It is a sign of both strength and wisdom. Asking for forgiveness helps us to learn, to grow, and to love.

    We all have to make decisions all the time, and we have an abundance of choices, ranging from tiny issues to vital ones. Unfortunately, people often find it hard to make decisions{#blank#}1{#/blank#} If you would like to improve your skill of decision making, here are four suggestions for you. Don't expect to have it all.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} You can't order every delicious dish on the menu. And there will be paths not taken, careers not chosen, to name a few. You can imagine some “what if' situations if you must, but do not let them take up too much space in your brain.

    It's often good to think through your decisions. But don't overdo it. Research can reach a point where returns begin to reduce, which makes it confusing more than clarifying. Many good decisions can be made based as much on intuition (直觉) as on careful assessment of endless data.

    Don't delay making decisions.

    Yes, there is a time to put off making a decision. Perhaps you need more information{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Or it's likely that you wait for a less stressful time. Just don't wait so long that the decision is made by your own indecisiveness.

    Don't be hard on yourself.

    You decide to go on a voyage. You choose an expensive liner. Everything should work out just right. Only you didn't expect a bug that ran around on the ship, making you and your family sick for five days{#blank#}5{#/blank#}But please remember it is unavoidable sometimes.

A. Don't spend too much time thinking.

B. It is an important source of information.

C. Don't count on emotion to make decisions.

D. Maybe you wish to consult with your advisor.

E. You may regret making such a stupid decision.

F. That means the skill of good decision-making counts a lot.

G. Decisions force us to close the door on other possibilities.
